Pryor cut.....Now his agent says he'll become a receiver..... Guess he wasn't all that impressive for us.

Meanwhile all the Bengal players are gushing over AJ McCarron..... Hobs and Lap are throwing cold water on the whole thing -- Reminding us that he's a 5th rounder with no NFL experience, weak arm, etc..... I have to admit that I'm interested in watching the guy play. As PacMan says -- He has that 'it' factor.

Oh the irony, Hobs talks everyone up during minicamp, every year there's someone who had an amazing minicamp was going to have a breakout year. But we can't get too excited about AJ, because they cannot have their precious little Andy face any competition or threat for his job because he's too fragile

Hobs reason why AJ can't play is that he's never taken an NFL snap..... Wait, wasn't that true for Dalton?

It was true, but the Bengals had nothing. Palmer quit, and the Bengals were willing to reboot completely with rookie QB and a rookie WR as the #1 WR...Not quite the same situation.

I think the cold water is more about the fact that it's not happening. AJ is never going to step onto the field unless the Bengals are down 35 late in the 4th, up 35 late in the fourth, or unless Dalton is injured.

Besides, how many players have we seen "WOW" in mini-camp, training camp, and pre-season who went on to do exactly what in their NFL career. I'm interested to see him play, but to get a real feel for what he can do, he needs real NFL reps in a real game, which he won't get.

The Bengals have no use for players with the "it" factor, it conflicts with their strategy of being mediocre.

Don't get me wrong -- I agree that we should throw cold water on the idea that AJ will play. He won't. It's not in the plan and it's not going to be in the plan for this season (if the wheels fall completely off, it could be on the agenda next year).

That said, I just thought it was pure Hobs.... As Alf says -- The guy makes every guy look like a superstar and puts no limits on their abilities to contribute. But with AJ, Hobs makes excuses for why he won't play. I get it, he's a company man and he can't come out and tell the truth - AJ won't play, because Marvin is too stubborn to make changes. Palmer did him a huge favor by quitting - Because Marvin was never going to make changes on his own.

BTW -- If there were ever a guy that would have been mentally ready to play as a first year or second year guy, it would have to be AJ right? He started for three years in a pro-style offense in the SEC. Whether he has talent or not is a an entirely different question.

If Hobspin and Lapham are downplaying, then I believe we really may have something in AJ. We know they want to protect Dalton at all costs and maybe they see a real threat to "Katy's Klown".

I don't disagree with that at all.

Not only that, but assuming everyone is healthy, it's a pretty ideal situation for a younger QB (hell, any QB: LOOKING AT YOU DALTON!). First off, he sat last year and got to watch. So, it's not like he was just drafted this year and thrown to the fire. He's been around, knows the plays, and the players. There would be an adjustment period, sure, but having been around for a year would really help, you'd think.

Secondly, the offense around him would be set up to work. He's got a stud WR, some good #2 options in Jones and Eiffert (again, with health), the OL is good, and has depth. The RB tandem might be one of the best in all of the NFL, and can be leaned on heavily especially with the OL that is out there.

Seriously, if Dalton can't make this work, they need to close up shop on him. If everyone is relatively healthy through the year and he sucks balls...

Wait, forgot...Mike Brown is still alive. Damnit. Carry on.

AJ will get his shot in 2016, when Green, Jones, Sanu and Zeitler are all on other teams, so the offense is dreadful

I don't think there is a chance we let AJ Green go. He is a top 5 WR, he is a good guy, stays out of trouble, not a primadonna like Chad, TJ and Terrell Owens were. I think they give him almost anything he wants with a little Brown Family Special Discount of course.

I kept saying that AJ McCarron is that guy that has the "it" factor like Boomer had. I said all that after the season ended and I fell off the Dalton bandwagon. Everyone insisted that he played in a pro offense with a prolific amount of talent around him, and he did, but I think he was the driving force that kept everyone moving in the same direction.

You don't wind up with Miss Alabama if you do not have that charisma that lures people to want to be around you or follow you. Same with Whitworth and Miss Louisiana. I am not sure McCarron's abilities are greater than Dalton, but his leadership, smarts and ability to avoid mistakes will drive him a long way in the NFL if ever given a chance.

And he disappears in big games, so he fits right in

AJ McCarron's biggest fault was not that he has a weak arm, his arm is just as strong or better than Dalton's. It was that he made crazy mistakes being a bit too aggressive.

We're not going to keep giving Andy Dalton raises that would mean that we can't afford to pay other players. Dalton was drafted in the 2nd round due to a heavy QB need. McCarron would have been drafted around the same time as Dalton if he was healthy and graduated the same year. We've already been through this. McCarron's upside is better, but Dalton is the starter since he's already years ahead of him in the NFL. I don't know how far McCarron would actually take us, he might make us miss the playoffs some years and yet help us go further other years. He is more volatile than Dalton, but that's honestly not always a bad thing.

We aren't going to pay Dalton 'Peyton Manning' type money, it just doesn't work with Mike Brown economics. Not going to happen. his days are numbered. so they have to promote the next guy, regardless.

His contract is extremely team friendly. In order for many of the big $$$ to kick in on his contract, he has to actually win in the playoffs, win an AFCC, and get to a S.B./Win a S.B.

That was the knock on McCarron with him only throwing 15 INT's total, in 3 seasons, in the SEC? Well damn, bring that shit on then. He seemed like a guy willing to take risks but not over the top risks. Palmer had a tendency to take a huge amount of risks too thinking his arm strength would prevail, and sometimes it did, but other times it did not. This is a game of inches, a Superbowl decided by 3 feet. You have to take a little risk.

He is a legit leader though, and that is what this team needs is a field general to get them together, help them focus and to show them t he way. Someone they can have confidence in.

This is true for the early years..... But look closely. His base salary this year is only 3 million. It jumps to 10 million next year and 13 million the year after. Next year the cap hit to cut him would be 7 million - But a 7 million dollar 'dead-cap' hit means nothing to the Bengals. They'd be happy not to spend that money rather than pay out 10 million to a quarterback that can't win. His base pay in 2017 is 13 million with only a 4 million cap-hit if they cut him.

Make no mistake -- If Dalton fucks up this season, the Bengals will use him as a scapegoat and move on to the next (cheaper) version. Hell, Marvin might even use it as a scapegoat to get himself another extension.
