Report: Warriors want to sign Dirk Nowitzki in free agency
Well, this is a surprise

The Golden State Warriors' 73-win season ended in heartbreak on Sunday, and when the front office recovers from the Game 7 loss, they will think about ways to get better in the offseason. They might even try to add a big-name star, like Dirk Nowitzki.

Wait, what?

Yes, according to the Mercury News' Tim Kawakami, the Warriors have set their sights on Nowitzki, a 38-year-old future Hall of Famer who has spent his entire 18-year career with the Dallas Mavericks. Is your mind blown? Does this make sense to you at all? My answers to those questions and yes and yes, kind of.

From the Mercury News:

"We will be very aggressive," one Warriors executive said late Sunday night when asked about the team's approach in the coming movement period. "Very, very aggressive."

...

They will have some money to spend, can create more space if they need to, and can offer a nice situation for a veteran aiming for one last title (and to be credited for returning the Warriors to the mountaintop).

And Nowitzki-who won a title with Dallas in 2011 but hasn't won a playoff series since-is somebody Warriors management has circled.

...

Let's be clear: The Warriors first and foremost still want to clear the decks for a run at unrestricted free agent Kevin Durant.

...

Nowitzki, also a pending free agent, would be a next-tier discussion for the Warriors, and I'm told they have no idea if he'd be interested in leaving Dallas.

Why this could work: Save for a massive surprise this summer, the Mavericks will not have another legitimate chance to compete for a championship with Nowitzki. He has said that, if the Mavs choose to rebuild, he does not want to be a part of it. Golden State employs Nowitzki's friend and former teammate, Steve Nash, as a part-time consultant. The Warriors don't have a ton of flaws, but it was plainly obvious that they could have used another big man in the NBA Finals. Nowitzki is still remained an incredibly skilled and efficient scorer, and the quickness and athleticism on Golden State's roster can cover up for his weaknesses. Also, who wouldn't want to play in the Warriors' system?

Why this probably won't happen: Nowitzki has directly said that, after opting out of the final year of his contract, he plans to negotiate a new deal with Dallas owner Mark Cuban. He has also repeatedly said that he wants to finish his career with the Mavericks. It's unclear what role the Warriors would be able to offer him -- starting center, reserve power forward? -- but whatever it is would be a massive departure from what he's used to. Golden State apparently doesn't know whether or not Nowitzki is even thinking about a change of scenery, and -- forgive me for saying this about an all-time great -- given the composition of its roster, it cannot be sure that his value on offense would offset the fact that he cannot switch onto smaller players on the other end.

Until there is a report that Nowitzki is picturing himself in a Warriors uniform, it would be best not to get too excited about the possibility. Still, this is interesting, isn't it? Free agency is going to be fun.

Sidenote: This is exactly why, after Dallas was eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder, coach Rick Carlisle said that the franchise had to hope this wasn't Nowitzki's last game as a Maverick. Carlisle stressed then that he didn't want anybody to take Nowitzki's presence or loyalty for granted. I'm not saying he knew Golden State would come calling, but he did know that other teams could at least give Nowitzki something to think about.

Looks like clickbait to me. He's like Timmy, the guy would never leave and if he did, the Warriors wouldn't be where dirk would go.
Cuban and Dirk would have to have a huge falling out. Dirk loves Dallas and Dallas loves Dirk. I keep hoping Romo and Beltre get to have their Dirk moments and win so they will achieve Demi-God status like Staubach, Aikman, Modano, and Dirk have in the metroplex.

Beltre pretty much has so a title will only further cement him, but if Romo were able to pull it off, every Dallas fan that hates on him would have to forgive him.

Beltre could do it his last 3 years here. Romo appears unlikely at this point.

A healthy Romo can do it if the defense can be just average. Hell, they had a damn good chance two seasons ago but a DeMarco fumble and a phantom no catch took em out.

I like the pick. It's at least a pick based on talent and upside and not some PR stunt like Sarge or Singh. They could have done much worse with that spot for sure.

I think the big winners were Philly and Phoenix, while the Spurs got a great steal at the end of round 1.

And Sacramento should just fold the team. What a disaster.

Ok, time to play "who will the Mavs end up with this summer"? The games begin at midnight ET and all reports indicate that they plan on offering Whiteside and Conley both max deals, while a few reports have them linked to Dwight Howard and Nicolas Batum. Plus there is the issue of Chandler Parsons' free agency and whether he will return or not. And, although it's not really in question, there is still a minuscule amount of speculation about whether Dirk stays or goes.

I'm gonna be "that guy" and say that history repeats itself. I predict Dirk remains the loyal soldier and believes Cuban when he tells him he will build up a winner around him. Dirk signs at an even further discounted rate to allow the Mavs as much room as possible to chase other star players. Both Whiteside and Conley reportedly "consider Dallas" only to ultimately spurn them for other teams. By then Parsons will have left and Batum will have re-signed in Charlotte. Cuban then gets desperate and either throws the full $24M at Howard or over-pays other available mid-tier guys and/or has-beens.

What do you guys predict?

Report: Chandler Parsons has four teams on his free agency list
Free agent star has a lot of choices, and likes the Lakers among other teams

Chandler Parsons is not going back to Dallas.

The Mavericks forward is done in the Big D and will be looking for a new home at midnight Thursday as an unrestricted free agent. Now Howard Beck of Bleacher Report reports that Parsons' list of teams he's interested in includes the Blazers (who he's set to meet with soon), and three other teams.

Top 100 Free Agents
It's an interesting list. Let's go a little deeper on each:

  • Los Angeles Lakers: He gets a ridiculous amount of money, gets to play the older, more experienced player, much like Matthew McConaughey in "Dazed and Confused." It's not a bad fit, even if it's a little weird given Brandon Ingram's presence. Parsons would fit perfectly with the Lakers' lifestyle, and his versatility would help a lot. It's still kind of odd from a basketball perspective, though.
  • Blazers: This is seamless. A playoff team on the rise with a core of players closer to Parsons' age. A market that will adore him and a system that will make the most of his talents on both ends of the floor. Parsons gives the Blazers a third shot creator and weapon on the wing who is an upgrade over their restricted free agency options like Alan Crabbe and Mo Harkless.
  • Grizzlies: Memphis could definitely use a player like Parsons to create and make shots on the wing, he fits all of their needs perfectly and would give them a boost in the Western Conference. To make room for his contract, however, they might have to trade one of the core pieces, and even then, Parsons may want a "cooler" team to join, even if Memphis gives him a chance at playoff contention annually over the next three to four years if Mike Conley re-signs.
  • Magic: It's Florida, which he knows from college, and they'll offer a lot of money, which is good. They have money to burn and a good roster of young players. This may not seem like an obvious fit, but it actually works pretty well. He would be the guy in Orlando, and that's a rare situation.
One thing is clear: Parsons' injury history is not going to hurt his free agency options. He's a hot commodity.

Report: Mavs are front-runners for Hassan Whiteside; Heat lost ground
Dallas might land a big-name free agent center, after all

The Dallas Mavericks are the favorites to land center Hassan Whiteside in free agency, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski:

A few thoughts:

Top 100 Free Agents
  • It's hilarious that the Miami Heat have "lost ground" in the chase for Whiteside before it is even allowed to officially begin. Free agents are allowed to talk to teams starting at midnight on July 1, so the league cannot be happy about reports like this.
  • Let's remember the DeAndre Jordan fiasco of last summer before declaring that the Mavericks have found their new franchise center. There is plenty of time for this to go sideways.
  • If Dallas does get Whiteside, it would be an extremely interesting partnership. The Mavericks have historically gotten the most out of centers who can protect the paint and finish alley-oops -- it's not just Tyson Chandler, remember how effective Brandan Wright was there? -- but I wonder how much patience coach Rick Carlisle will have for Whiteside chasing blocks at the expense of his team's defensive schemes.
  • If Whiteside curbs that habit, then he could be one of the best centers on the league at both ends. Aside from outside shooting, he has just about every tool that teams want out of modern centers. This would be a massive signing for the Mavs, and it might help them attract other free agents. They are reportedly chasing Mike Conley, by the way.

I'll believe it once the ink is dry on the contract. I'm not saying it can't or won't happen, but DWill, Howard, and especially DeAndre taught me to be skeptical of reports like these.

Im afraid it could be ugly. Really want Dirk to finish his career in Dallas, but at some point I think he may leave for more $, this may be the time. After getting burned last year it is tough for that to not be in the back of our minds. I won't feel comfortable until any FA actually becomes a Mav. Huge Mavs fan but it appears it will be some time before the team is actual contenders for another NBA championship. Drafting where they do every year doesn't give them much opportunity to build that way and we know the draft history. Just hope to stay competitive until Cuban and the FO can put together another championship team.
