In other Winnipeg news:

In the meantime, True North is also hoping to announce the name of Winnipeg's team before the draft.

The NHL's board of governors is meeting in New York on Tuesday and will approve the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers and the relocation of the team to Winnipeg.

Unveiling the team name could take place shortly after Tuesday's meeting, however because of the uncertainty of the logo and sweater design, Winnipeg will use a generic NHL sweater when making its first selection, 7th overall at the Entry Draft.

That kinda sucks for the guy drafted as it diminishes the thrill of putting on that first NHL jersey, in my opinion.

They have been very coy about the team's proposed name, but I think you're right, puck, it's looking like it won't be the Jets.

I am hesitant to call anyone's journey to the 7th game of the SCF a fluke run, but let's look at MacT's coaching record:
inherited a decent team, that had finished 2nd in the NW for a couple of years running, and been bounced by Dallas for a few years running.

00-01 - 2nd in NW, bounced by Dallas in 1st round (6 gms)
01-02 - 3rd in NW, missed playoffs
02-03 - 4th in NW, bounced by Dallas in 1st round (6 gms)
03-04 - 4th in NW, missed playoffs
05-06 - 3rd in NW, miracle run to the finals, within a game of winning the grail.
06-07 - 5th in NW, missed playoffs ...... how do you NOT build on the prior year's experience?
07-08 - 4th in NW, missed playoffs ..... still nothin'
08-09 - 4th in NW, missed playoffs ..... aaaand fired

there's just no growth there.

Yeah well consider where he coached. After that 2006 run, Edmonton did a fabulous job torpedoing their own team. Ownership issues, mismanagement, players having affairs with weather girls and demanding trades. Mac T did the best with the teams he had, which were usually always mediocre at best.

my point was he started with a decent club.
Weight, Smyth, Guerin, Comrie, Marchant Carter, Niiminaa, Brewer, etc.
(i know most of those guys suck now, but they didn't 10 years ago)

from that starting point, they never improved, except for that one magical run, and were a LOT worse after it.
yes, there was a lot of bullshit surrounding that team, but if I recall correctly, part of that was players not wanting to play for MacT.

Well, I do agree with you though, this is not the best choice for starting over in Winnipeg. What also puzzles me is how fast this decision seemed to have been made when there are other candidates out there.
