I'm sorry, I tried to ignore this and couldn't. They are in the desert, there's not often mud in the desert. So really they are stuck in the sand spinning their wheels. Which can be just as bad.

I've managed to get past quicksand and even the ROUSs.

But the lightning sand still scares me.
