Dallas Cowboys targeting Scott Linehan to call plays - NFL.com

A few points here...

1) Jerry Jones is trying everything he can to win, except cutting himself out of the loops and turning the team over to a GM.

2) The Cowboys, despite having Murray in the backfield, ran the ball one of fewest times in the league last year. They only handed it off 336 times, which makes them 31st. The kicker is they averaged 4.5 yards per carry when they did. What the hell?!

NFL Stats: by Team Category

They were 13th in the league at pass attempts - passing the ball even more times than Green Bay.

3) So they're going to hire a guy that's going to pass even MORE? Scott Linehan?

Linehan was among the Lions assistants let go after Jim Schwartz was fired this month. Under Linehan, the Lions finished sixth, third and fifth in total offense over the past three seasons. Linehan is known for his pass-heavy approach -- he's unlikely the man to solve the Cowboys' balance issues on offense in recent years.

I think unfortunately the Cowboys are falling victim to the league wide trend of being a more pass oriented league. It's not the answer for them. Give the ball to Murray because good things will happen. The plays Murray gets may result in bigger runs, but focus on the things you do well.

Actually the phase of pass oriented offense is fading. The future is a blast to the past. You can see it among the better teams in the league, even the pass oriented teams are taking note and adding it into the game plan.

Look at the teams that are going with a stout d and good running game. Seahawks,49ers, Panthers, Chiefs, other teams also, but they haven't got the talent right now.

There are very few Peyton Mannings, so it makes more sense to draft for defense and a good running game and add a good ( not elite) QB. How many teams have bombed trying to find the next great thing at QB? Many!

Also once a elite QB gets his second contract , he take such a huge slice of the pie, that teams has to address savings else where.

It's not cut and dry, but the defense and running game is back in the game plan!

I would add the Eagles to that too. And the Colts. Right now the Colts dont have the horses, but there is a reason why they traded for Richardson. They run a lot of multiple TE power sets and use a lot of play action. They're not trying to rebuild what Manning had there, they're trying to build what Luck had at Stanford. Hell, I think GB is going to continue to build their power run game too.

The Eagles is a great example, imo. It's really a power running game that opens up everything else in that offense. Of course it helps to have Shady McCoy back there. He is a great player. Not every team has that talent.

They may have the best line in the league too.

Cowboys passed the ball in 5% more of their plays than Detroit (Only Cleveland and Atlanta ran the ball at a lower %)and Linehan did this year. Now, 2012 is a different story. No offense passed with a higher frequency than Scotty's. (Had Stafford not came back to beat the 'boys this year, none of this would have happened. Offense went to shit(sloppy sloppy sloppy) after the pick up game style of that win.
