Hey guys...its been a while I know some of you all missed me. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on our corners. It could really make or break this season. I think we have a really solid team sans the corners. Will Slay, Green, and Bentley develop into solid corners this year? Mathis is aging, does he have anything left? I think Slay is the best of the group. Will this group surprise the league?

About the corners, it is this board's opinion that since these young corners haven't already morphed into shutdown quality, they will always suck.

I get that feeling as well sometimes.

Well, the 2013 Lions CB unit has 2 whole INT's last year total and neither of those came by any corner still with the team. So, you would think improving to 3 this year would be easy, but then again this is the Mayhew Lions were talking about. They could easily have 0.

But that little Lions logo on the sides of their helmets continues to give us hope. :hope:

Nah, that's not it.

I think it's more the fact that most good corners in the league are kids that have been able to sit behind a couple of quality starters for 2 or 3 years before they are asked to cover the best WRs in the league.

You fellas keep offering up this generic proof and our corners keep sucking.

The rest of the league has nothing to do with the Lions. Positive NFL trends don't apply to the Lions. Never have.

Plus we haven't had any good corners for these guys to sit behind. Maybe on other teams they would improve. Maybe they're all just another bunch of Mayhew misses. Probably a nice hearty combo of the two.

Since the turn of the century -- Detroit has spent exactly one draft pick in the 1st or 2nd round on the CB position. It was on Darius Slay -- Who, IMO, is the only CB on our roster who has any chance to become a CB resembling a #1 for Detroit.

Out of curiousity -- which CB's on the Lions roster do you see as developing into quality starters in the NFL? I have no opinion on the guy drafted in the 4th round this year, as we haven't watched him play yet. Bill Bentley would have to grow leaps and bounds to be in the conversation as a solid #2 CB -- I think he will end up our nickelback by default. Jonte Green was a solid pick because it was in the 6th round and he made the roster, but he is going to be a career backup on Detroit. Chris Greenwood can run like the wind and jump out of the gym, but everyone knows my opinion of him -- When top D1 CB's start from scratch when they hit the NFL -- Greenwood is even further behind in his development, as he basically played high school football in the MIAA.

I have no problem handing out praise to the Lions where I see fit. And if the Lions had a history of developing talent and hitting on mid and late round picks in the secondary or elsewhere -- I would give the CB's the benefit of the doubt. They haven't shown anything that would make you think the Lions are going to be in good hands in the future though.

The one CB I really like is Slay. He played in the SEC. He has the size and speed. He has a good head on his shoulders and seems willing to reach out for help to become a better player. He is the one guy I am hoping develops into a quality CB. After that -- the Lions will be drafting more CBs in the upcoming draft to replace the guys who haven't "developed" to their liking.

I think these young guys will sink or swim this year. If they can not get there this year then they very well may be let go. After 2 years they need to be on the field. Year 3 and 4 will determine if they have a future in the NFL. Unless you draft a CB early in round 1, there is not much he will do in the first year so these late round picks usually need a few years.

I think Slay will be fine. Not sure if he is a number 1 but he has the tools. Mathis still has something in the tank from what I saw last week. Hopefully Florence does too. Green looks a little slower but was still somewhat effective. Bently still looks lost. Lawson playing in his first game was not impressive, but it is his first time in live NFL action. Did not even notice if Greenwood played. Cass Vaughn actually looked good. I think we have enough depth, but we need a guy to step up and be a stud and noone has done it yet. Maybe Slay will do it.

No Mayhew said they have potential and he liked them...thats why they will always suck!

Interesting answers. In fairness to our young crew of corners...the d-line never seemed to put much pressure on anyone. And since Gunther never blitzed...anywho, we let some bad QB's pat the ball back there with no fear. No corner can cover forever.

I think Green got cut for picking off a pass. Makes the starters look bad.

But I like Slay because Rod Woodson likes Slay.

Green looked really solid on the ride out of town. He really opened those hips up like an All-Pro when he turned and flagged his cab down.

what generic proof exactly ? The fact that Rod Woodson stated "it takes 3-4 years", in a Freep article back in Feb. or March, "before you know what u have in a CB, to become good", all the while, Slay was being mentored by him in the off-season at Woodson's house. Never mind the fact that Slay only had been given 4 starts in a possible 13 games.

I'd actually like to know your un-biased thoughts regarding CB's in the NFL, 1st rounder's of course

1) to know what went wrong with Slay and how you would have helped him be better 1st year
2) what options were better in 2012 or even 2013 and what would they have done under Lions position coaches, not what said players did under another teams coaches (whether HC/DC/Position Coach

I don't give a rats ass what CB "might have amounted to something" pre-Mayhew being GM or when he worked under Millen.
I'm not a fan of Mayhew by any stretch of one's imagination

That is the most I've laughed in a long time after a comment posted on here. Lets all hope Detroit's CBs catch some passes this year. We are going to need turnovers from the defense to be successful.

The CBS are definitely a huge weakness along with he kicker. I demand perfection.
