No worries. My reply sounded more dickish than I meant it to.
The playoff round is more than I expected. Hopefully the 200k and being out for some playoff games will finally convince Cooke to change his game. Unlike other Pens fans, I still think Cooke - without the dirty stuff - can still be a positive contributor to this team. I'm not willing to blow almost a million dollars in cap space to buy out a guy who shows he can play great hockey when not being an idiot.
On another note, I have to ask those who wanted Cooke to get more: Do you just want Cooke to get more because he's a dirty player and you despise him, or do you honestly think there's any precedent or comparable suspensions in the history of the NHL that merit a season-ending, 20+ game suspension? If it's the former, cool. But I don't know how you can justify the latter. With respect to the actual act, this is one of the harshest suspensions I think the NHL has ever handed out. As long as they continue this trend from here on out, I've got no problem with it, but to think the NHL was lenient on this is crazy. They finally sent a clear message.

I think he's still got value as a player if he cuts this crap out of his game. I think he'd be an awesome third liner (maybe even a borderline second liner) if he cut the dirty crap out and just focused on playing hockey. He's a decent skater, has good hands and a decent shot, he can hit, and he's strong defensively and on the penalty kill. But the dirty stuff brings a lot of undue trouble to his teammates, and I don't think he can stop it. I just don't think he's capable of cutting it out of his game at this point in his career.
Well, I guess if we can make it out of round one, we'll see.
With Cooke's suspension out of the way, I'd like to see the NHL publish some official rules regarding headhunting (elbow, blindside, crosscheck, whatever) penalties. An exponential increase in suspensions would be good:
1st infraction: 2 games
2nd infraction: 4 games
3rd infraction: 8 games
etc...
And maybe have a one-year carry-over (ie. if you had two suspensions last year, your next one is 8 games, but once you have a clean year you reset).
Of course, that's just for minimums. Depending on the severity, you can bump it up.
I'd put in something similar, but maybe not as harsh, for boarding, and another set of rules for violent play (sucker-punching, etc...). I just don't think the NHL can afford to go the "we'll just wing it" approach anymore.
I agree. We don't win a Cup without him.
Also, and I'm not arguing this was Mario's intent, but the league could be better off with us keeping him. If Lemieux/Bylsma/Shero gets him to change his game, I think that is long term more positive than Cooke merely going to another team and playing his same game. Not saying it's a guarantee, he will change. Anything but. Just hoping this brings about positive change.
The only place the Penguins are better off without Cooke is the court of public opinion.
Disagree. I think the older Pens needed his toughness/grit, but I think the current Pens have plenty of that without him. While I hate Cooke, he pretty much gives the Caps one stupid penalty every time we play the Pens, and I appreciate that.
financially, that $219,500 gone from Cooke.
will THAT sink in, a least?
They way I understand it is this is the MAX amount he can lose.
Teams receive bonuses the farther they go into the playoffs. Those bonuses are paid out to the players equally. Unless players have bonuses writen into their personal contracts, they are not paid during the playoffs. They receive their equal portion of any bonuses the team receives from the league, if they receive any at all.
So if they Pens make it to the second round he is out $219,500 bucks and will be well rested for the second round.
