If the NHL deems something legal the team has no recourse to tell him to stop or he will be out, especially when the player is under contract.

Well, this is not something "legal" we are talking about. And a team can cut a player for just about any reason at any time. They may still have to pay the player, they may still have to pay a cap hit, but they can always cut them.

A team can waive/cut someone for whatever reason they want....They still should've sat down with him and said cut the shit

are you telling me that a player can conduct himself on the ice in a reckless manner and if its considered legal at the time, the GMs or ownership cant take a stand?

If any GM doesnt like the style of play of a player or it doesnt jive with their organization philosophy and goals they can cut ties as simply as processing a waiver transaction. Shero and Lemieux could have taken this stand back when Savard was clocked. It wasnt like Cooke didnt have this dirty player rep back then. It wasnt his first rodeo. The organization didnt have to begrudgingly accept it because "technically it was legal"

I agree with that. But to be fair, (I know, WW, reported!), maybe they did. It will be interesting to see their next move.

I have to imagine they'll be cutting him or putting him on waivers, but we'll see. Then it will be interesting to see if someone else picks him up, or not. Which would be the ultimate punishment here.

Lets not pretend like we know what Lemieux and Shero did or didn't say after the Savard incident. All we know is that he's been talked to by high ups before this incident and afterwards.

The fact that he could play a game in the NHL this season is wrong though

i agree with this ... the guys favorite time of the year to play is playoff hockey ... Pens advance and he can find himself available to play

Lemieux told him to change how he plays or leave. He'll get one more game, I would guess, and he'll be around until he misbehaves. He'll play, but on a short leash, and I don't think that's hypocritical at all.

I would have imagined Lemeiux would have told Cooke his shit wouldn't be tolerated at the time he made he now infamous comments on head shots. What is it they say, change starts at home?

I feel terrible for the team that the Pens hypothetically will play in the 2nd round

One would think that if they did talk to him after the Savard hit, he'd allready be gone...and that if they did, the leash they gave him was too long

well no big surprise. he got exactly what i thought he would get but he should be gone for the entire playoffs if penguins advance past the 1st round. Curious to see if lemuiex will allow him to dress if they get to the 2nd round

In some ways, it's unfair the NHL is allowing the Pens to play without the handicap of Matt Cooke in the first round. At least if the Pens somehow pull off a first round win, we are assured Matt Cooke will be there to hold them back in the later rounds.

The suspension is fine with me. The NHL is going through an adjustmnet period and if Cooke is the poster boy, warranted or not (it is), so be it.

I am one that still likes Matt Cooke's game, I think he is valuable, and I can't wait to see him in the Pens uni in rd 2 and for the following 2 yrs.

Drinking and posting - dangerous combo. ;)

Jokes aside - not sure how you can condone this type of hit and Cooke's "game." Being a tough hitter is one thing, being a cheap shot artist and a dirty, head-targeting player is another.

how about, I can't wait to see him back in the pens uniform.

I don't condone that type of hit... it needed to be addressed and it was and I hope Cooke learns from it. Head hunting is not Cooke's game. He just needs to be smarter. But hey, I still like Ward and Harrison (steelers) who both have been guilty of head shots... so maybe it's just me.
