Season + All of playoffs

not unreasonable at all. I do like seeing the number lost of almost a 1/4 of a million dollars. that is big for a player like cooke

If he's out that long, and the Pens make the second round. He'll get one game. And if he so much as looks at a guy wrong, he's done forever.

I will say I'm surprised(read impressed) that the league is attempting to hold him accountable for his actions. However the simple fact is that after all the issues the league has had with concussions over the past 2 seasons it seems that the poster boy for head shots gets a chance at playing at all this season if the Pens win in the 1st.

From a Pens standpoint(Mario in particular) is he ever suits up for them again it proves that they are the most hypocritical organization in the world.

That's my guess, too. The ultimatum is likely "Keep your trap shut, your elbows down, and your stick on the ice, or you're gone."

Who knows, this might end up being the best thing to ever happen to him in his career. If he's forced to play without being dirty, maybe his talent will start to really show through.

Lemieux told him to change how he plays or leave. He'll get one more game, I would guess, and he'll be around until he misbehaves. He'll play, but on a short leash, and I don't think that's hypocritical at all.

I just cant believe this type of ultimatum didnt come when he smoked Savard ... I guess theyre building up to the strongly worded letter in the personnel file

It PROVES it... FOREVER!!! ;)

I actually think this is a very appropriate ruling by the NHL - it punishes a repeat offender pretty severely (what player wants to play all year and then miss the playoffs) and it tells Matt Cooke to clean up or it will get worse (and calls into question his employability for all GMs out there). Kudos, NHL. Only bad part is they didn't do this a couple years sooner.

Kypreos twitter this morn

I'm told #Pens Mario/Cooke had spoken at great length yesterday and was basically told to change the way he plays or leave

lucky Pierre said this morning that the Pens had a closed door meeting post game yesterday and Cooke apologized to the team

At that time, it could be defended as a technically legal hit. Sure it was vicious and likely malicious, but he didn't technically break any rules. His last couple incidents have broken actual written rules. There's no defending him now. That's why the ultimatum comes now.

The Savard hit was "legal" the team couldnt discipline him for something the league found to be a legal hit.

you can still tell him that its not acceptable and if he continues to do shit like that his days in the Burgh will be numbered....

If the NHL deems something legal the team has no recourse to tell him to stop or he will be out, especially when the player is under contract.
