Okay, that's pretty much how I see it. Cooke left his feet and he's Cooke, so I'm sure he didn't care if he took the guy's head off, but if that's another player just finishing his check, I say the other player put himself in the position to be hit like that.

So just to be sure I am clear, you are saying that Tyutin looked, saw that it was Cooke, pontificated on Cooke's past, then decided to turn around to be in the perfect position to have his face driven into the glass.

And in that same amount of time, Cooke couldn't muster a hockey stop?

No, I'm saying Tyutin looked and saw Cooke coming and played the puck anyway. Yeah Cooke should have let up and it's Matt Cooke so he deserved no benefit of the doubt, but I used that to springboard a general discussion about when it's a player's responsibility to let up on a punishing hit and when it's a player's responsibility to not put himself into a vulnerable position when he knows what's coming. I made sure to articulate several times that I meant this in a scenario where Matt Cooke was not the party involved (random Joe scrub from whatever team who didn't have the reputation that Cooke has where you know a dirty play was intended.

Edit: Also Cooke left his feet so it was automatically a dirty hit, which I also articulated several times.

So we all agree Cooke is a victim and the NHL just be hatin' on him?

Good.

I watched it plenty of times. If you think Steckel didnt see Sid or didnt intend to knock him down then you are a HUGE homer.

Oh the irony.

Awaz described the scenario dead on a page or two ago. When you factor what appears to have happened and Steckel's complete lack of trouble with the league or anything controversial, you have a pretty clear cut situation that was an accident with unfortunate results.

I appreciate the larger debate, but here is the answer... The player making the hit has the responsibility to make the hit cleanly (if possible, otherwise, play it another way - poke check, shoulder hit from the side, etc.) and is responsible for any penalty or possible suspension that may come from making an illegal hit on the guy. Simple.

So I was flipping through the channel and stopped on ESPNews, and on their litte sidebar rundown they had the Cooke suspension listed something like "Ovechkin hit suspension" for a good 3 minutes before they got to it and changed it to "Penguins Suspension". Just found that a little "funny"

Wow, another Caps fan see it as an accident. I am SHOCKED...

Do you seriously think this was incidental. Pull off the homer glasses and see that he hit him. Was it brutal or blatant, not really but he was certainly not trying to avoid Sid.

(1) His right shoulder (the side Crosby was on) dips away and his left shoulder goes up as he tries to dodge when Crosby enters his periphery, (2) his feet are going up ice (not towards Crosby), and (3) he is looking up ice at the puck and not at Crosby.

When guys go to hit players they generally (1) lead with their hitting side higher to deliver the blow, (2) turn their lower body towards the person they are trying to hit, and (3) look at their victim. Dave Steckel does none of those things.

Were he trying to deliver a glancing blow he would have at least looked at Crosby or lifted his elbow in passing. He does neither of those things. And Dave Steckel has ZERO history of playing dirty. No suspensions or even hearings I am aware of. Most Caps' fans would opine he does not hit enough given his size.

These are observations on the situation. Do you have any? I'm not trying to use my homer glasses here. I don't see anyone aside from you in this thread claiming this is anything but an accident.

I said my observations, it looked as if he were intending to send the bump the superstar message and it ended horribly wrong. Not to injury just the simple bump you see on stars and goalies. I am not blaming the kid as this happens all the time nor am I saying he should have been suspended. But for the other Caps fan to run his gums about Crosby should have learned this in PeeWee when in fact this is both players fault in my opinion, and could have easily been avoided by Steckel as well.

You want DJ King on the ice for this one too, 46? I do agree he is going to have to answer to something when these 2 teams meet for the last time this season...

If I thought that Cooke would answer to King, I might. I do not think that Cooke has it in him (though he did fight Thornton after the Savard hit). I would like to see Hendricks go after him, if possible. I would say Erskine, but we are thin on D right now and Erskine is playing at a much higher level than he usually does. I really like what his game has become.

Other? Hey! There are 3 of us!!! ;)

I agree with you on the "head down" stuff. Guys are going to get caught with their heads down every once in awhile. It happens since the puck can generally be found on the ice surface.

I just don't see any evidence of a "bump" which would have revealed some of the things I talked about earlier - elbow up, head turn, lifting the shoulder towards him, etc.

As for a fight, I think you gotta go Hendricks-Cooke. Middleweight for middleweight is only fair. With Bradley back healthy, I can't imagine we'll see DJ King again this year with 3 guys (Brads, Hendricks, and Erskine) who are willing to drop the gloves and can actually play hockey in the lineup.

Ain't happenin'...

At the rate the Penguins are losing their top scoring forwards, you will probably see some guys with the name of Boulerice or Haddad skating in Cooke's spot.

Maybe steckel will want to get in on the action, since they'll be full of AHL scrubs. :P

I'd let Engelland take on all comers in the fighting department for the Penguins. Fair or not at this point it doesn't matter. The Penguins have too many injuries to worry about a fight being fair or not.
