I am not worried about a HC that knows how to be a great coordinator. I want a HC who can manage personnel, evaluate talent, and be an effective strategist during game day while commanding respect from his players so they rally behind him and want to succeed so he succeeds.

My hope is, he can find a really good OC and DC that are dedicated to their job so he doesn't have to worry about those phases of the game.

A HC shouldn't have to be a great coordinator, he should be a great gamer, who has a keen eye for talent and can get the most out of that talent while being a respected field general. Basically a CEO with a talent for game management.

Hopefully, if he picks the right coordinators, those coordinators are talented enough to customize a playbook that utilizes the strength of his unit, not forcing his unit to conform to his style of play making their particular skill set obsolete.

Yes, but some of the same qualities that make a good coordinator also make a good coach. Getting the most out of available talent and system is important. I'm okay with the HC also calling his own plays on offense or defense. I was getting tired of ole Marv just sitting back and watching us fail. I actually applauded him for taking over his failing defense and the truth is that he made a difference.... They played better under him.

I am not disagreeing with that. I am just saying, being a great coordinator is not a necessity in my book. I don't really care if the new HC is an unknown as long as he possesses leadership/management skills, a great talent evaluator and the ability to strategically manage a game better than his opponent. Being somewhat younger would be a plus too, say in the 40-45 range.

Reports today suggest McDaniels has turned down our offer of an interview. The Bengals are also expected to interview Todd Monken the offensive coordinator of Tampa. Monken's offense put up some big numbers with Fitzy as the qb. He fits the profile of a guy that might not have enough of a reputation to command all the control that top candidates might want.

I wonder if Fitzpatrick actually put in a good word for him with Mike Brown.

This name really intrigues me as an outside the box hire. 5200 yards passing with a journeyman QB and an erratic young QB. I'm assuming he was the playcaller.

According to the rules that were passed at the owners meeting last winter, no one can announce a new head coach until the day after the Super Bowl unless that coach's season is over. Anyone in the playoffs cannot be officially offered a job until 2/4.

Yes, he was the playcaller for most of the year. Apparently after the Bucs loss to the Redskins, a game in which they gained over 500 yards and somehow had 3 points, he was stripped of playcalling duties for a week. And then he was reinstated as the playcaller.... Basically, Dirk Koetter grasping at straws at some point.

I'm with you though - He's an intriguing candidate. And if he can get that much out of Tampa's offense, I'm thinking he would do well with the Bengals.

He and Bieniemy are my top two, with the OC at the Rams not far behind.
