And to name him as one of the officials literally the day after.

He must have dirt on Bettman or something.

Obviously, the league agreed with Walkom's call last night and gave him a better grade than at least one other official that worked in round 2. Yes, you read that right, Walkom's performance in round 2 was deemed better than one of his colleagues.

/Scary stuff

in their highlight packs post game last night ... tsn and sportsnet both a number of tweets by nhl players saying to the effect "Walkom is a top 3 ref in the league" or "walkom is one of the best refs in the league" or "walkom is the best ref in the league"

the statements pretty much all preceded the players saying "BUT THAT WAS A GARBAGE CALL"

sounds like he is the best of a bad bunch GREAT~!~!! :noidea:

Ferraro made me chuckle this morn when he said if we went through the season canning or making refs "disappear" after they made bad calls, 8 year olds would be reffing the upcoming conference finals

he National Hockey League says it stands firmly behind NHL referee Stephen Walkom's third period call waving off a Chicago goal in Game 7 of the Blackhawks' series against the Detroit Red Wings.

Walkom drew plenty of attention Wednesday night when he called back defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson's goal late in third period that would have put the Blackhawks up 2-1.

A league source explained to TSN on Thursday that Walkom's job on the play was to watch behind the play and not concern himself with the puck. The whistle was blown before the goal and the league agreed that the no-goal call was, "absolutely correct."

The goal was disallowed with 1:47 left when Walkom called coincidental minor penalties behind the play seconds earlier.

Chicago ended up winning the game in overtime when Brent Seabrook scored at the 3:35 mark to send the Blackhawks to the Western Conference final against the Los Angeles Kings.

Both the Kings-Blackhawks and Bruins-Penguins series begin on Saturday.

Based on the fact that the whistle went before the goal, to the letter of the rulebook, yes.

But I still want the league to weigh in on what exactly Saad did that was a penalty. Getting checked from behind into the bench? Suplexed? Kicked in the head? What did he do?

And it wasn't the fact that Wing (Zetterburg, I think) went down at the blue line that could have looked like a trip at game speed. Because if he was calling that, the Hawks had possession and it should have been blown dead right there. Before the pass ever got through to Hjalmersson.

Walkom was watching the scuffle, somehow missed Saad getting kicked and looked as though he was going to let it go until Hjalmersson got open. Then he blew it. He was completely concerned with the puck. So much so that he saw Saad commit some kind of penalty that no one else caught.

Kerry Fraser's take:
Fraser: Walkom should have let play continue before goal

GinoRedaTSN: Just spoke with Mike Murphy, Sr Vp Hockey Ops, says Walkhom "absolutely made the ballsy correct call...and will definatley work Conf Finals"

Gino should stay off Twitter when he's drunk.
