Or as Zappa said
Ughh, I never considered the more punts/returns issue. I actually like the more punts idea, but the returns aspect does totally contradict what they're trying to do. Gotta be some sort of good middle ground solution.@TREFF
#1-why is virtually every defensive penalty an automatic first down, but every offensive penalty, except intentional grounding, never results in so much if a loss of down? I know, ratings driven offensive mindsets..but the competitiveness of the league as a whole would improve if there were some balance there, and the ratings aren't going to suffer if an offensive holding call results in a loss if down, nor if a defensive holding is just yardage.
my take:
Defense always gets shit on when it comes to rules/rule changes in the past 15 years or so. It's like the NFL is making up for all of its fledgling seasons of letting the defense man handle offensive players any way they saw fit. How many years were D-lineman allowed to bounce a QB's head off the field while making a sack or getting pressure?
I think we'd all agree too long, but that doesn't change the fact that the "safer" you make the game, the more and more the offense will be able to exploit the rule changes over the defense. I love your thought of making more offensive penalties equate to a loss of a down, but that would lead to more punts.
More punts = more returns, which in turn would = more big hits/high impacts/more injuries........exactly what the league is doing their best to avoid right now.
Watching Bills v Redskins. If you can, somehow, find video of the roughing the passer penalty at 7:15 left in the 1st quarter. Wow.
So tackling is now a penalty?huh just watched that beyond terrible
