For those of you wondering, that, ("Baby if...") is the opening line of the theme song from a long-ago television show, WKRP in Cincinnati, which seems appropriate for this Monday's tilt between the Commanders and Bengals. A significant win by either of these teams could signal an reintroduction to being serious players in this 2024 season. The Bengals are heavy favorites to win this one, but the upset minded Commanders seemed determined not to be an easy out for their hosts.

When the Washington Commanders face the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, September 23,2024, I expect to see an exciting matchup with several key elements to watch for:

  • Quarterback Battle: The Commanders’ rookie Quarterback Jayden Daniels, has shown promise in the early season for those who needed more to see before acknowledging the obvious. His performance against the Bengals defense and the head to head matchup with Joe Burrow will be focal points.
  • Running Game: Brian Robinson Jr., coming off a career game against the Giants now becomes the measuring stick as he tries to break through the Bengals defensive line and softens it for his running mate Austin Ekeler. Another performance like the last one will certainly open up the passing game for a team that’s lacks true firepower at the position.
  • Defensive Pressure: I’m not sure what to make of the much ballyhooed defensive front for the Commanders, but needing to see a lot more production from them is a must if the Commanders hope to come out of this one with a win. Allowing Burrow to feel comfortable spells a long day for this bunch.
  • Turnovers: Both teams will need to minimize mistakes but a team without a clearly defined identity such as Washington will be hurt more by them than the more veteran laden balanced team that they face on Monday.
  • Special Teams: Well, we know that the kicking game has improved, at least thus far but more reliance on field goals than touchdowns cannot become the norm for this team. Long punt and kick-off returns will swing momentum by scoring and shortening the field.
  • The Bengals are currently favored to win, but the Commanders have shown resilience and could pull off an upset. It should be a thrilling game with plenty of action on both sides of the ball. Enjoy the game everyone!
