I know he wasn't everyone's brand of vodka, but you could tell he loved the game of hockey. What a character.
I enjoyed him, he was an original. And there is only ever one original.

It's the imitators that get on my nerves. Like the Jackets' radio guy.

You can’t say enough good about him and his love of hockey.

There was also the time ‘86-‘87 he did Pirates baseball, along with some national NHL broadcasts (non-Penguin games) and he was equally as good.

RIP

I can't find the video, but I vividly remember Lange getting an interview from Bill Clement after the first win, and you could tell he was just as excited as the players were.

Side note: I cringe every time I see KBL network. They were god awful, and it was insane how many times broadcasts had issues.

KBL always had audio or sound issues, and whenever they would fix the broadcast Mike Lange would always say "the lines were cold"

To this day I still have no idea what he meant, like the coax cables were too close to the ice or the production group were in a walk in freezer?!?

To this day when talking about it I still call it the Civic Arena and not the Mellon Arena.
And when saying that to my kids they look at me like WTF are you talking about? I always forget it was never called that while they were alive.

Oh I can't remember who was that god awful replacement they brought in for Lange, on the radio, in the 90's?

EDIT: It was Doug McLeod and his annoying metallurgy save.

You mean Doug McDull. He was absolutely brutal, I think when he left Pittsburgh he ended up as the avalanche play-by-play guy on TV

@thedddd the worst Pittsburgh announcer of all time, and I'm sure you remember him Kent Derdivanis doing Pirates baseball.

The one thing that I will never forget that he did, was I was listening to a game on the radio coming home from work and he says Van Slyke lifts a lazy fly ball into right field, oh wait a second it's gone, that ball is 10 rows into the stands.

And on that same note his radio calls left most things up to your imagination.

He would always do something like this..

"The 3-2 pitch, (insert 5 second pause), and that's the inning"

Did the guy strike out, fly out ground out or get hit in the head and die, what the fuck?
