The good news is that regulation wins is the first tie-breaker and Pittsburgh leads the way of the teams battling for the last wildcard spot. The bad news is that they no longer control their playoff destiny.

You could insert any of the teams chasing that last spot in the blank. The Pens have been wildly inconsistent. The Caps goal differential would be one of the worst to ever make the playoffs. The Wings have given up more goals than any team currently in the playoffs. The Flyers were outscored 42-18 during an 8-game losing streak before finally winning their last two games. It's hard to imagine any of these teams being a playoff team... and yet, one of them will be.

Some of this is honestly just the age of parity though. I was kinda going through the teams this year (in the East especially) and I ended up with the conclusion in my head 'none of these teams are good enough to be in the Cup final.'

I've thought that many times in recent years whereas in the age of yesteryear there was always a few teams that you were scared when your team went up against. Maybe this is my own observer bias, maybe the salary cap has created this, or perhaps with more teams than several decades back the talent is more spread pushing the best/worst closer to the mean. I don't know. I mean the Caps won in 2018 and I don't know if that was even one of their 5 best teams in the last 20 years. You run that 2016 PIT-WSH series 20 times and I bet the Caps win it 12 or 13 times out of 20. But you only run it once, and they didn't win. This is all to say in baseball and hockey the best teams win 60% of the time and the worst 40% of the time and it's thin margins on everything. That's what makes it amazing/terrible.
