I like Linden; he's no dummy. It's a bold move but I think he's trying to show the fans there's going to be accountability with him in charge and that accountability includes himself.

Also, by making such at offer, I believe that even if things don't look completely rosy, fans will still renew because they feel they can trust Linden.
