Note that I said someone like Chip Kelly. Plan A (in general terms) was to find a slam dunk elite coach and pay him a ton of money. Plan B (in general terms) was to find a young up and comer that they don't have to pay a ton of money and then hire an elite coaching staff. Plan B could have included Matt Rhule if Oregon valued him over Taggart. My only point was that a guy like Dan Mullen didn't fit in either plan. Oregon didn't view him as an elite coach and it was going to take 5 or 6 Million bucks to get him to go to Oregon.

Ummm see my previous post. The plan was to go relatively cheap on the HC and open up the checkbook for assistants. Oregon didn't see the purpose of paying someone like Dan Mullen (And I mean no disrespect towards Mullen, he's a solid coach) $6 Million. So they got a young guy on the cheap, relatively. And now they are going to go out and let him assemble a great staff. I think it's actually a pretty smart move given the circumstances.

Seems like a pretty dumb strategy to me. It is much easier to hold on to a HC, than it is an assistant. What if UCLA calls Leavitt next year? Now what happens if you lose those Coordinators? Then you have to change your offense/defensive strategy. There is no continuity in that, which means it has real potential to harm development.

Again, it's not that the HC is a puppet. The strategy isn't dumb. If there isn't an elite HC available, why wouldn't you open up your checkbook for an elite assistant coaching staff. I like that strategy a lot more than just paying an unproven coach a ton of money and banking on him becoming elite.
