Collins needs to be drafted in order to re-enter the draft | ProFootballTalk

It looks NFL GMs aren't the only ones blowing smoke come draft time. La'El Collins' attempts to bluff himself into a draft next year by threatening not to sign with a team if he didn't get selected by the third round (which he wasn't) has hit a bit of a roadblock. That's because if he doesn't get drafted this year, he can't enter the draft next year.

If no one takes him today, he becomes a UDFA. He could then sign with any team of his choosing, but his pay would be subject to the rookie wage pool provisions of the CBA. Collins could opt to sit this season out. But that would be stupid, not only because he's not playing this year and not getting paid, but he's not draft eligible in 2016.

If he were smart, he'd want someone to take him now. That way, he can sign with a team, earn some money, get credit for a year toward being a UFA in a few years, and get on with his (NFL) life. If he's truly the first round talent that many make him out to be, he can get a big payday in a few years. This isn't the greatest of options, but it's appearing to be his best one right now.

And if he becomes a suspect in that double murder investigation and goes the way of Aaron Hernandez, all bets are off anyways.
