Notre Dame probably fits your criteria except for the conference part. Why not keep cheering for Penn State? Does it still bother you even though the people involved in the scandal are no longer there? They're in a good conference, games are probably televised in your area, and their record isn't important for you

Jump on the Miami Hurricane bandwagon. There is lots of room right now. A long weekend in SOBE is hard to beat, always good seats available.

I graduated from a private D3 school that didn't have football.

If you're in upstate NY, why not Syracuse? Closer than many alternatives, and since they're on TV here in Virginia, I'd think they'd have to be on in NY. Moving to the ACC soon. They have a history with players and moments of glory, but aren't dominating. They have some decent regional rivalries (including with BC). Basketball is big there if you're into that. Just a thought.
