These reviews and suspensions have been so inconsistent lately I don't know what to expect.

I agree that the hit was clean. However, with the precedent set on other hits, Staal gets suspended a game maybe two.

Slightly-OT: Was Avery ever suspended for his Carcillo impersonation on Smid? Was it even looked at?

Usually when a precedent is set, it means Campbell will ignore it the next time around.

Unless the hit is on that little fake artist, in which case precedent is everything.

FWIW, tweets from Bob McKenzie on the Staal hit (in reverse order):

I expect NHL will see it as legal hit, more north-south than east-west and not technically blindside. Most will agree, tho maybe not in CGY

Bottom line is Rule 48 is very confusing to me. Stajan, BTW, didn't have his head down. He had it turned. Does it make a difference?

That is, don't drill vulnerable guy in head with your shoulder. Pre Rule 48, no problem, bombs away.

Rule 48 was supposed to transfer some of responsibility from hittee to hitter when hittee was in completely vulnerable position.

That said, I can honestly say I have never been more confused about what is or isn't legal than I am right now.

I get that most, outside of CGY fans, see Marc Staal hit of Matt Stajan as clean but it looks like Rule 48 violation to me.

My opinion: Since the refs didn't call a penalty on the play and the hit itself is questionable (i.e. whether it is or is not in violation of Rule 48), I don't believe Staal will receive a suspension or be fined.

This just in from Bobby Mac:

Marc Staal hit on Matt Stajan has been deemed a legal hit by the NHL

Put me in the camp of not understanding Rule 48...I do agree that prior to this rule, I would have no problems with the Staal hit.
