I've spent enough time in Montreal in my life to say at the very least I've often felt uncomfortable with my lack of French. Glad you got by there without it but not my experience.

I just did a cursory search of the last census and the only South Shore communities I could find with a home English rate of 10% or higher was Candiac (19%) and Brossard (12%). Still seems like if you're looking for an Anglo suburban community you'd at the very least be limited.

Just off the top of my head Chateauguay is much higher than that and if any stat says different either they're wrong or there has been genocide in the last 10 years. The fact is that between 65-80 percent of Montrealers (greater MTL) speak English.

To characterize the place as language-nationalist is ignorant (willfully or otherwise).

Yup, Chateauguay is 25%.

Montrealers being able to speak English doesn't always mean they choose to let English-speakers know that they understand and can converse in it.

If you want to say the Island is largely void of that sentiment, fine. The discussion was largely regarding suburban areas though and it's hard to argue things aren't different there.

I was going to laugh at this because I first thought this was making fun of Beavis Conway but nope:

Granted this was over a month ago but still.

There needs to stop being two Bowling Greens as long as my son is in one of them, especially when we're talking about shootings.

The fact that you don't know, or won't admit, that huge parts of the island ARE suburbs says all we need to know about your argument in this case.

Kirkland, Pointe-Claire, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue are very Anglo.

Okay, fair enough, was kinda just leaving the island as a whole since much of it is quite a bit older but that's a fair point and I am aware of it.

Whatever the case though Montreal grows at a much slower pace than virtually every other Canadian major market and I do believe a large part of that is due to outsiders wary of being in a jurisdiction governed almost independent of the rest of the country by a very blatantly nationalist government who seem intent on broadening their policies to fit that agenda, even if they aren't blatantly separatist these days. The "language police" are still around and they haven't exactly taken a break during the pandemic. The rest of the province is still inarguably Franco and in large parts rarely bilingual. Work can require proficiency in French. It has a lot going against it as an option for many Canadians and a lot of it is self-inflicted.

A lot of that is accurate. The government in Quebec is generally xenophobic which doesn't help. And people are scared of learning another language. Well, English North Americans are anyway.

People lumping Montreal as part of the Franco-Nationalist-Separatist group with little to no basis in fact certainly doesn't matters.

He must have figured out that there is either money or oiled up hunks in it.
Most likely a lucrative green energy contract he's trying to get for SC. Complete with oiled up hunks working on the construction.

I know I'm late to the Montreal discussion, but I work with a guy who was born and raised there and graduated from McGill before moving to Southern California. Barely speaks a word of French by his own admission.

Talked that shit into existence almost

Opposite side of Campus and campus PD apparently found the dickhead quick. My son was n the shower and missed the whole thing. Came back to his phone on his desk with all the alerts and the all clear.
