So for those keeping score:

• If a few cars burn and there are protests with no fatalities and a few injuries in one city - send in federal troops.
• If thousands of houses are destroyed and there are 100s of fatalities and 10,000+ displaced citizens - no federal role.

Makes zero fucking sense. No single state would build up the resources to respond to unpredictable emergencies, but federal resources can be shifted and localized if hurricanes, wildfires, or tornados are particularly bad in one state or region. As a taxpayer living in a relatively disaster free area, I fully support this even if takes up a big portion of the federal budg.... 0.7%. Seriously?

So this makes no sense logistically since support needs can be highly localized and experts in a variety of things at the federal level provide support on areas counties or states may never or very rarely need. It makes less sense when you consider natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more severe. And politically it's a time bomb since all Americans support helping those in need. Beyond that, there's this:

• Red states with 42.7% of the population have 56.6% of the number of federally declared disasters and get half the FEMA aid. Blue states with 42.2% of the population and 35.8% of the number of disasters get 47.5% of the FEMA aid. So neither party is immune, but Trump's own supporters are receiving more of the aid.
• George Bush's response to Katrina sunk his approval at the start of his second term and it never recovered..

Really terrible decision to remove the federal government from an area that makes MORE sense for federal oversight than just about anything beyond national defense and social security.

This is not only irresponsible leadership, it's going to come back and fuck this administration at some point.
