see the problem with that statement is it forces you to do it.. because the players wont sign for cheaper when they can make that much somewhere else.. thus, it sets the market value for a player.. i'm all for finding cheaper talent as well, but the problem is, you cant find cheaper talent that is talented enough to fill that role, unless you plan on trading for it.. but if there is a top 4 guy that is playing for bottom pair $$$, he's going to very expensive (picks/players) to acquire

the only other alternative is to try and 'matt read' a defender or expect gust to improve enough to play top 4 minutes next year, plus having 2 of bart/marshall/kessel/etc. improve enough to play in the 6 and 7-holes, all of which are reaches IMO..

that's why its so important to have 1st round draft picks (cough, pronger trade, COUGH COUGH COUGH).. so that you have guys like luca sbisa with an entry-level deal that can play top 4.. the only way to not overpay (cap space wise, or player wise) talented players, is to have drafted them

I don't agree. The draft is obviously the best way to get young, cheap tallent, but in a league like the NHL where most picks don't make it to your team for a few years, you got a better shot at picking up prospects from other teams than in sports like the NFL or NBA. The key is to be able to recognize NHL level tallent better than other teams and hopefully get your mitts on them before they get to the NHL. Sometimes the extra "throw in" guys for trades turn out to be huge contributers.
