Dreger: Examining the possibilities of a 'coach's challenge'

Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon says he is considering proposing a coach's challenge rule at the November GMs meeting in the wake of Colton Orr's controversial winning goal Tuesday night.

Not really sure how that would work... how far back could you go? There are lots of stretches in a game where they go 5 mins without a whistle. And I'm sure there is at least 1 infraction let go every few minutes.

I think the idea has some merit, but first I'd rather see a) better training for refs and b) holding refs accountable when they make obvious mistakes. Otherwise, I'll continue to wear my tinfoil hat.

ummmmmm..... I thought they DID review that play anyways (and any goal/non-goal that was close)
I guess a challenge would open up a bunch more categories of ruling that can be challenged.

the mention of a potential 2 min penalty for a failed challenge is a pretty brutal deterrent from going for a challenge. the results of the reviews thus far have been pretty damned arbitrary at the best of times. Forfeiting a time-out is OK, but what if you've used your time out?

how about the refs (including the war-room) stop being such fuck-ups?

Perfect. They already review every goal, non-goal, and might have been a goal. They just suck at it, and leave too much up to referee discretion. (Still bitter about Brad May).
