$50k is nothing at that level. We may have learned how to bring good coaches in but do we know how to keep them? We shall see.

The problem for paying our position coaches real well is guys like Bud Foster, TG, and potentially Leofller will need big raises.

We can't pay our OL coach $350-400k if our top of the line DC is making 450k. Give bud a raise to 700k and then you can bump everyone's salary up too.

Just for comparison, this is what some programs in our region pay their OL coaches (nifty link at the bottom). For the first contract, 265 might be a bargain. It's pretty clear to me though that we should expect to pay up for proven success at our level.

Tenn: $350,000
SCar: $325,000
Clemson: $310,000
Georgia: $310,000
Louisville: $300,000
-------VT-----------
NC State: $262,500
WVU: $250,000
UNC: $250,000
Maryland: $228,377
Georgia Tech: $217,500
Kentucky: $200,000
UVA: $183,000

No data for Pitt and Penn State.

Searels is on board, so I guess it was enough.

VT got a real bargain on Grimes, as Auburn paid $110K of his salary, and he missed out on his retention bonus of $50K.

Of course the real bargain on Grimes would have been if he had stayed on for a few years until the OL was where he wanted it to be. The same applies to Searels. We won't know for a year or two, but so far, it really seems like the right move.

Well, it seems we are on par with UGA's and Clemson's if you add in the retention bonus. I think VT should just take what they can get at this point. Everything will shake up again in a couple years when Beamer retires.

Not sure where NC State is getting their money....Yow is probably digging a hole for that school the same way she did at Maryland.

Ralph was a solid coach in his time. For those that didn't watch as much ACC football when Tech was in the Big East, Ralph's offenses were dynamic. I have a lot of respect for the guy, despite mixed results as a head coach, and was sad for the way he was ousted at Maryland.

WRT Virginia Tech, a decade ago, he'd have been the perfect guy. Of course he was having success as a HC at that time. Unfortunately, now Ralph is a very short term fix for a desperate coach that almost inevitably is on the way down. Ralph might still have some success, but I'm glad that the desperate coach wasn't Frank Beamer.

I would have been all about Fridge after MD dumped him, but not so much now. We needed new blood, just as Frank said. Bringing in his best buddy Ralph would have wreaked of the good old boy network that the fan base was really growing weary of.

Friedgen seems very likeable, and a helluva coach, but I think CFB made the right choice here. Maryland, not so much...
