What the hell is wrong with the Broncos job? If they wanted Payton, they'd have hired him by now. Harbaugh apparently said no thanks (a bit of a surprise). Quinn pulled out and now so has Ryans. That should alarm Bronco's ownership.

Where does that leave the Broncos? One would think they'd take a hard look in the mirror and ask why these candidates aren't interested. There were reports that Payton backed out over concerns about a power issue with ownership. All that was denied by others, but something is definitely wrong in Denver.
Read somewhere that Payton wasn't thrilled with one of the owners who was overly involved in the process and would continue in such a role regardless of who the HC was...Payton doesn't really work that way, and I'd be willing to bet that many of the top candidates agree (assuming this was correct, of course).

Seems like there has been quite a bit of dysfunction from the ownership group in Denver in general, though. Could be a reason.

It has to be something like that--something so high-level that it has spooked all of the A-list coaching candidates. So far, The new Bronco ownership looks to be stumbling out of the gates...

PFT says that "chatter has increased over the past day that Fangio could be the replacement for DeMeco Ryans, once the 49ers defensive coordinator takes the head-coaching job in Houston."

Just saw that Payton is going to be the HC for the Bronco's. Bronco's are giving up the first they got from Chubb's trade, a future second and third.

And Ryans has agreed to become the Texans HC.

Saints get Broncos 1st round pick this year (#29) and next year's 2nd round. Broncos get Sean Payton and the Saints 3rd round pick.

Texans hired 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans as head coach.

Down Bad in a way that few franchises have been the last two years, the Texans over the last four months have shed chaplain Jack Easterby, fired Lovie Smith, and now hired one of the most-qualified coaching candidates in the NFL. Also, he just so happens to have played linebacker for them at one point. Assuming Ryans brings 49ers offensive components and staff with him, they should quickly start to function like a real NFL organization again. It's a big up arrow for Dameon Pierce and Nico Collins this offseason, as well as Brandin Cooks if he doesn't get traded. It is impossible to speak to how big this move is for a franchise that has not won more than four games since 2019 -- it signals a positive sea change that was needed in the worst way.

Just one more job to sweat for Steichen and the Eagles with the Colts. Cardinals haven’t interviewed Steichen. I have no clue in which direction those teams will go.

Swear, I've never seen anything like this. A 1st and 2nd rounder for a head coach? The absolute fuck? Did the Saints have nude pics of Payton and his wife or something and turn them over to the Broncos as a result of this trade?

One of the (if not the) most ridiculous trades in NFL history. Saints A+, Broncos F-.

Were you born yesterday then?

Why don’t you take a look at the trades teams made for John Gruden, Bill Parcells, hell even Bill Belichick.

I think there is an argument to have about whether it still makes sense to use draft picks to get a proven coach. Draft capital is becoming such a big part of team building if you're looking for sustained success. On the other hand, it's still a coach and QB league and Denver knows as well as anyone that simply plucking a good OC off the market isn't necessarily fool-proof. Teams that have made deals for coaches in the past have definitely benefited to various degrees of success/length. Just hasn't been done in a long time so the jury is out on this one.
