They should let him rest up until week 5 so he can regain his strength. JJ probably needs a breather week 4 as well.

I've never felt Clowney would do well in HOU...round hole (DEF) square peg (Player)...maybe part of me thinks they were boneheaded for not taking the ATL trade.

Hopefully he will be healthy enough to play enough to be judged on the field, else it's going to look real bad in HOU.

Eh, you can't always hit a home run in the first round. In defense of Houston's front office at least Clowney's lackluster career hasn't been due to not being a NFL caliber player. It's mostly injuries.

Hindsight is always 20/20 they say...I remember that negotiation pretty well...ATL offered #6 overall and I think a 3rd and another 3rd this yr...no, not breaking the bank for #1 overall, but considering HOU really didn't need a 4-3 DE...in their 3-4 scheme, injury aside, I think they could've improved the team more not taking him.

That's why trading up is incredibly risky. Atlanta is very lucky Julio Jones panned out. Otherwise they'd be a great example of why no team should mortgage their future on an unknown commodity.

It is risky...even with hindsight of the injury...that one made sense for ATL...but good that Dimitroff stuck to his guns.

OTA update...Ledbetter said on Friday that Vic Beasley is most likely going to start the season as a 3rd down pass rushing specialist...that (the fact that he might not be a 3 down player right away) seemed to raise a lot eyebrows from on the sportstalk medium.

I think it's smart...he's listed as the 1st team LDE...given that most teams are right-handed and will make that the strong side...I don't see him being a big run stopper yet.

I've never been a big fan, so maybe I'm jaded, but I think Baker might be in some trouble...right now he's the 2nd team LT behind Matthews...apparently they don't think he can play RT. Schraeder is getting a lot of 1st team reps at RT...can they afford to keep Baker as a back up OT?

Yes, they can afford it but it obviously wouldn't be the best case scenario. I think they're trying to give Baker an incentive to work harder and show him he isn't cemented into the lineup. Either way, he's probably not just going to be cut.

The NFL is a quarterback league. If you dont have one, you aint gonna win.

The league is built on getting to the quarterback and protecting the quarterback. So, getting a pass rusher is a must. But they already got one of those guys, and they just paid him Quarterback money. Why draft Clowney? Just didnt and dont see the reasoning.
You realize that the #1 QB that year was Bortles, right? Bortles hasn't exactly elevated himself out of bust territory either

Dimitroff does not want to be on the hook for $9.5 in dead money, but if he's not going to start, I don't see how they can justify affording him. Wow...was I right on this one.

Called him a bust from day 1. Clowney is easily the most overrated defensive prospect in recent memory. "The Hit"?! Are you kidding me? The guy tackled an unblocked 5'7" RB who had ZERO chance of making any league period... What a joke.

Clowney was the dumbest pick of all time. At least Russell played QB. Mind you this is not POST-DRAFT, this is PRE-DRAFT.

I understand that...my feeling was/is, you just need to get a quarterback-pick one, and move forward.

You dont have to bet the organisation's cash reserve on the number one pick anymore, like when the Ram's got Bradford. So pick one and go. If you dont get one, your stuck in limbo like the Texan's are right now, another year of 'just who is the quarterback?'

I figured they'd keep him a year or two longer even if he didn't start. That means whatever is left of his $10 million signing bonus is hitting the cap this season.

I think the old coaching regime would've done just as you figured.

I think if RT was an option then maybe they do keep him this year, but imo no sense moving Matthews around back to RT...he's the LT anchor now...there was no starting slot for Baker and his cap hit was too high for a non-starter.

May as well bite the dead money hit now (since the cut was post June 1, they may not take the cap hit until '16 season)...not sure how that works...the hope is that Schraeder is ready to start on the right side.

When Clowney plays this year, we'll know if he is any good. Until he plays, let's just wait.
or not, call him a bust so you can be first......

I think it's easier to side with you to be honest, but I'm not ready to say that having seen the kid play a lot more than "the hit". He's got some game.

I think much like Javis Jones who imo truly is approaching the B word if he can't figure it out in yr 3. These SEC DEF players often have way more hype than deserved...I just don't think you take a 4-3 DE from college and play him at 3-4 OLB in the NFL and think he's going to pick up where he left off in college.

IMO the dumbest pick in recent memory was Tebow followed by Johnny Manziel....if I went back a few more years...Aundray Bruce from AUB ranks pretty high for dumbest picks....#1 overall and his claim to fame in ATL was spot duty at TE?

IIRC the cap hit for the remaining bonus comes in the year the player is released.

You're right pre June 1, but there is something to the June 1 cut date though...I remember reading on one of the Steeler blogs about Troy P...the Steelers would save X amount if released prior to June 1 and Y amount if released after.

Ok I found something. I cut this from the Overthecap.com

Explaining the June 1st Designation

One of the questions I get a lot deals with what a “post June 1” cut is and how designating someone a June 1 cut helps my team. So lets talk a bit about that today.

What we are talking about here deals strictly with the acceleration of prorated bonus money onto the current years salary cap. The NFL essentially breaks up its salary cap accounting for bonuses into two periods with June 1 being the trigger date. When a player is removed from a players roster prior to June 1st all his remaining unamortized bonus money immediately accelerates onto the salary cap. To illustrate this we see how the Kansas City Chiefs gave Steve Breaston a $5 million dollar signing bonus in 2011, which was accounted as $1 million in yearly expenses over the course of his 5 year contract. When he was released just the other day he had only completed 2 years of his 5 year contract meaning the Chiefs salary cap had only accounted for $2 million of the $5 million paid in 2011. The balance of $3 million dollars immediately accelerates onto the Chiefs 2013 salary cap.

After June 1 the NFL changes the way the acceleration works. After June 1st only the current years expense remains on the books after the player is released. The balance accelerates onto the following years salary cap. So in Breastons case had the Chiefs waited until June 1st to release him his salary cap charge in 2013 would have been $1 million and in 2014 he still would be on the books at $2 million dollars.
