Hall-of-Famer Chubick: Huskers Have the Heart to Win an NCAA Game - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site

I'm a fan of Randy York's N-Sider so just wanted to throw this out there for anyone who missed it.

I remember Bruce playing high school ball and people used to drive from everywhere in Nebraska to watch him play. Gyms packed every game they played home or away. I can remember thinking he was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in person on a basketball court.

Anyway, great read if you hadn't yet.

Bruce lived just down the street from me in Council Bluffs back when we were in grade school. All us neighborhood kids picked on him a lot because he didn't seem too bright, as well as his name was funny. He wasn't that much taller than any of the rest of us either back then - I remember for some reason chasing him down an alley to beat him with his own shoes (weird memory).

Years later I saw news about him playing at NU and thinking "that can't be the Bruce who used to live a couple blocks away" and then I saw his picture sometime later and it was confirmed.

I went from feeling bad about messing with him and went straight to jealous as hell. Either way, years later it makes me proud now to have seen him do so well in life.

Great job Bruce.

Bruce and Tom Wald did a one-week basketball camp in my hometown when I was in seventh grade. I wanted to play Division One basketball when I grew up, and was asking all sorts of questions about drills, how they got recruited, etc. Bruce said "You have a lot of questions, let's talk about it over dinner". He and Tom took my family and I out to dinner that night and answered a ton of questions and basically laid a blueprint out for me if I wanted to be a college basketball player. All out of the goodness of their hearts. Great guys, and will always be my favorite husker basketball players of all-time.
