In a year where money was such a big issue, where fans were very vocal about these guys making ridiculous money and complaining, it's sad that a guy who made that much of it couldn't figure out how to manage it. Some people just aren't meant to have a lot of money. I could live the rest of my life on what he made in one year.

Yeah, but still, if you make that much (and I don't know how many kids he has) you should be able to afford it.

OK, it appears as if he only has 1 daughter, so yeah, $11,000 is ridiculous.

Ok I just did some numbers. Say he got roughly $40 million for that contract extension.
If you divide $40 kill. by $11,000 it comes to 3,636 (child support payments).
Divide 3,636 by 12 (months) and he could have paid that child support for 303 years.
Damn.

Yeah, that's insane. I pay a little under $300/month, and it seems too much.

Some people just aren't meant to have a lot of money. I could live the rest of my life on what he made in one year.

But you have had to spedn your entire adult life trying to manage the limited amount of money you have.

McCallister had it dropped right in his hands immediately following college. He has never had to manage his money on a budget, it was just buy whatever the F you want. That is why a lot of these players do not have anything after they retire.

I think these players sign contracts, the league should force them to put half their salary (above a certain amount - who knows what that is) in say their own retirement fund, which they then get once they retire from the league. This way they are not so F'd when they retire. (Granted, this is mostly for the idiots as most people know how to responsibly handle their money).

Granted though, almost no NFL player plays past 40 years old, so it is not like you are withholding so much money that these guys will never get to enjoy, because most retire so young, but you at least guarantee they will have somethign when they are done.

Rookies do go to seminars and are counseled on how to save and manage their money. If they aren't smart enough to follow that advice, then they get to move back home with their parents.

I know, but you just hear about this too often. As well as it probably shouldn't ever happen. But now you have to have the "suicide hotline" on speed dial at the McCallister household.

I know it will never happen but I actually like Crash's idea. When negotiation contracts, instead of just negotiating say 40 mil over 5 years, negotiate 30 mil over 5 years with 10 mil over 5 years going into a fund you get when you retire.

The players want the NFL to take care of them when they retire, not take money away from them while they're playing. That has no chance of ever happening.
