On one of his podcast breaking down film of Kendall Fuller, Chris Cooley wasn't too impressed with the kid. Among other things, he thinks he has problems trailing a receiver after the receiver beats his press coverage at the LOS, can't backpedal well in zone coverage, gets beat over the top, and draws a lot of PI for faceguarding. I'm not sure how much film Cooley watched on Fuller, but he gave this pick a C- grade.

While I really respect Cooley's film breakdowns most of the time, I'm willing to defer to Scot here, subject to the injury concern. Nolan Nawrocki seemed to agree and gave Fuller a top-40 pick grade.

Who knows? :noidea:

In Fuller's defense, VTs (former) DB coach was really good at alot of things, but one thing he was not good at is getting his guys to turn around with the ball in the air ... which resulted in alot of PI calls. I think Gray actually coached them to faceguard, because all of VTs DBs have been playing this way the last few years.

Kendall is not an elite athlete, but he is as technically sound as they come. He has a knack for making plays and is solid in every phase of the game. Will he get beat at times? Sure, the best in the NFL do at times so why wouldn't he. He was hurt in pre-season camp and played 3 games with a bum knee. Yeah, He got burnt on several occasions when we played tOSU.

Cooley needs to go back and look at his Freshman and Sophomore film.

I'm not sure how much he did in fact watch. I respect his opinion, but I'm going with Scot on this one as with Nawrocki who had him going in the second round.

Gonna go out on a limb and bet Cooley watched highlights of the 3 games he played hurt this year and that's it.

"trailing a receiver after the receiver beats his press coverage at the LOS, can't backpedal well in zone coverage, gets beat over the top"

are all things I would say are NOT issues with KF

My thoughts exactly. We don't expect him to be The Great Darrell Green right out of the gate, it will take some time. And even then he may only be a solid #2 but we'll take that from a 3rd round pick.

now Cooley is trying to be a DB expert? I'll trust what pretty much every other resource out there says over Cooley on this one.

Come on. Cooley is a bright guy and was involved in breaking down file for the several years he was playing as a TE. I'd trust his assessment over most if -- and it's a big if -- he ran through enough film of Fuller, though I'd put Scot's view of Fuller over his.

I'd honestly trust a VT fan that's watched all of his games over Cooley who may not have watched over 5.

I don't get the outrage on Cooleys assessment. Fuller's a rookie, coming off an injury. He's got things to work on. Some of those things he was coached to do at the college level. He's a 3rd round pick so expectations should be tempered by that alone.

I've seen other analysts list some of the same things as issues Kendall needs to 'unlearn' at the NFL level. Manny and Bullock both mentioned 'grabbiness, adjusting hips and not turning his face leading to PI issues' as areas that he needed to improve.

Chris Cooley is also a guy that sometimes just spews bullshit out of his mouth seemingly to be against the grain to get more views, clicks, etc. Sorry, I don't trust his assessment on this one whether that's wrong or not. He could very well be right and Fuller is far from a finished product.

I've heard him a lot and I completely disagree with your view.

I think Cooley gave an honest evaluation, but as someone alluded to, it's possible he was watching him when he played with an injury. Either way, I'll trust GMSM over Cooley - though the pick did surprise me.

That's fair Ruz. The pick surprised me as well. I wasn't saying Cooley was being dis-honest, but I was alluding to the fact that he was evaluating a position he's never played or specialized in. In Scot we trust I guess right?

The counter to that is there a plenty of folks who break down film who've never played in the NFL. E.g, McLoughan, Scot. Never even played in college (though his brother and father did).

Fuller was hurt and didn't play well last year, and he definitely has some additional things to learn. No arguments there.

However, before he was hurt he was a 5* recruit, and was a consensus 1st round talent, with Ramsey and VHIII. He played in a system where he was exclusively in one on one coverage against #1 WRs. It's fine if Cooley doesn't like the pick, but his analysis of Fuller's strengths and weaknesses is way off, and I think reading any real talent evaluater's reports on him will corroborate that.

Really hope he can get back to his former self, if he can, you guys got a steal. If not, he'll fit in fine as a nickel guy or potentially a saftey

Thanks. I'm going to rely on Scot's assessment that Fuller will return to 100% health and, when he does, we got a first round talent in the third round. If you may recall, we got that with Bashaud Breeland too a couple of years ago. He dropped to the fourth round because he had to come out early to support his family. The pundit consensus opined that if he waited another year, he would've been a first rounder. They were wrong. He was a first round talent when we took him in the fourth round.
