Just did a little research on Rays:
Last #1 overall pick was 2008.
Last top 10 pick was 2008.
Single digit 1st round picks were:
2008- Beckham (#1)
2007- Price (#1)
2006- Longoria (#3)
2005- Townsend (#8)
2004- Niemann (#4)
2003- Young (#1)
2002- Upton (#2)
2001- Brazelton (#3)
2000- Baldelli (#6)
1999- Hamilton (#1)

So top picks are not what made the Rays. Price and Longoria are the only two to even be a factor in their run.

Because teams that commit this much to only 3 players for such a long period of time and manage to contend perennially are limited to a handful with overall payrolls between $150-200 million per year.

But you are acting like if we risk the future in 3 years it will hurt us. We have nothing to lose since we haven't had anything in the first place. So if my choice is to gamble the next 3 years on go for broke deals or continue to just sit back and accept 4th or 5th place, give me the next 3 years.
