The UMass Dartmouth campus was ordered closed this morning after university officials learned that the suspect wanted in connection with Monday's Boston Marathon bombing and Thursday night's shootout in Watertown is registered as a student there.
Classes and other activities were canceled and the university urged students to remain in their dormitories and apartments until further notice.
“We are closing the campus, and we are evacuating Pine Dale dormitory,” said university spokesman John Hoey.
Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, lived at the Pine Dale dorm, according to Hoey.
“We're trying to put together the pieces,” Hoey said.
Twenty-year-old Alyssa Eklind said that Tsarnaev lived in her suite at Maple Ridge Hall last year.
“I recognized him when I saw his picture,” she said.
Eklind, a biology major, said she did not know Tsarnaev well but that he was quiet.
“When we had hall meetings, he didn't make any commentary,” she said.
Leanne Poirier, the managing editor of The Torch student newspaper at UMass Dartmouth, said that she had been advised to stay in her Hickory Hall dorm. There is a heavy police presence on campus, and the entrance to the university was being secured, while commuter students were being allowed to leave, she said.
