Atlanta submits bid for SEC-Big 12 ‘Champions Bowl’ | UGA sports blog

Atlanta submitted their bid to host the new SEC-BIG12 bowl matchup. Not many details were released and Chikfila Bowl president admitted taht Atlanta was an underdog, presumably to the JerryDome and the SuperDome.

They said Atlanta will also submit a bid to host the new playoff championship game.

The Champions Bowl, which will be renamed in conjunction with its host, will join the Rose and Orange as bowls guaranteed to host national semifinal games four times in the first 12 years of the college football playoff, which also begins with the 2014 season.

Three other bowls will be chosen to join the semifinal rotation, and if Atlanta does not land the Champions Bowl, Stokan said the city will pursue another spot in the semis. The city also plans to bid for the national title game.

Atlanta is also the future new home of the College Football Hall of Fame, scheduled to close in South Bend in December and open in ATL in 2014.

Original plans were for the Hall to be built in the green lot between the Georgia Dome & the World Congress Center, however the new plan is for it to be located near Centennial Park.
