What are you talking about? The Yankees just said they hope to offer a similar offer.

Yankees offered less year and less money and that was before signing Ellsbury and Kelly Johnson. (though im sure Johnson was not that much). Word is Mariners offer is in the 220 range while the Yankees are around 175. But I guess you never know until the ink is dry.

I'm all for getting Cano but at 30, is it really worth it to throw that much money at him for 9 or 10 years? The move can and will work for the first few seasons, but it will go downhill later. To think that he can keep up with the level of completition by the time he's 38, 39 or 40 with an insane contract is unreasonable to me.

I think this organization right now is very desperate to put a product on the field so they're willing to do anything. I really hope this works out because Cano and the Mariners will still need another bat to be competitive.

He's the best hitter on the market and a superstar player. You don't get guys like that for 4-year deals, so if you're intent on getting him, you have to commit to a longer term deal than you would for a lesser player and hope that he either produces at a high rate for more than just the first few years or that you can re-structure the contract in a way that makes it easier for you to offload him, or at least absorb the financial hit, when he does decline.

I don't think there's a team in professional sports that approaches contracts like this with a guy who has been around a while, with the belief that they're going to get the same production out of him towards the end that they will get in the beginning. They know what they're likely getting into, but they also know that they're probably not going to land that kind of player without doing it that way, so they do it anyway. It sucks when the guy does start to decline and the contract starts looking worse and worse, but the hope is that any championships won while he's still putting up the kind of production that warranted the contract to begin with will help soften the blow when that time comes. If he helped the Mariners to one or more championships, would you care that much about his contract if he should start declining in the second half of it while making as much as he did, or more, in the first half of it?

edit: By the way, he just turned 31 in October.

I don't see how he can pass it up but it really doesn't seem like his heart is into it. It's like he's saying "See Yankees! I'm going to do it! Hurry up, I'm getting the pen out!". Cano's great but putting him in the lineup isn't going to make us a contender for a playoff spot. We got problems all over the field. Kind of weird actually, a player might leave NY because the Mariners are willing to overpay him.

This is a deal where the guys on our end know that they won't be around anymore when he's old and overpaid. That many years for a guy who's 30? Dumb move. Not as dumb as the Pujols deal but still dumb.

Looks like any deal is off the table for Cano now thanks to Jay-Z trying to get an A-Rod contract for his client.

I think 1 of these 3 happened with this:

1) Cano/Jay-Z are using the M's to (futilely) try to get more from the Yanks.
2) Cano/Jay-Z are using the M's to try to get another (as yet unnamed) team to increase their price.
3) Cano/Jay-Z are idiots.

4) all of the above

Reading that the M's offered as much as they did and Cano not ready to accept tells me he has no intention of signing with Seattle, they are trying to get the Yankees to up their ante and, imo, will eventually sign with them. Fuckin pisses me off.
