Redskins notebook: New linebacker for 53; harris hurting
BY BEN STANDIG | SEPT. 5 , 2018

Wednesday of an NFL week means it’s go time. There were certainly some comings and goings with the Washington Redskins’ roster as they prep for Sunday’s Week 1 season opener at the Arizona Cardinals.

* No more debating for the Redskins with Byron Marshall. The running back landed on injured reserve Wednesday after missing the final two preseason games with sprained knee ligaments. Tough call for Washington. The medical timeline (Two games? four? eight?) remains uncertain, a team source told The Sports Capitol. Here’s the twist on the sprain: The presence of Kapri Bibbs on the practice squad gave Washington some comfort with the IR move. Otherwise, the sense is Marshall would have remained on the 53. Instead the Redskins go with four running backs for Week 1. Keep an eye on Bibbs possibly joining the active roster before Week 2 especially if Jay Gruden decides he wants another outside presence beyond Chris Thompson.

* With the open spot, the Redskins signed inside linebacker Josh Keyes to the 53-man roster, The Sports Capitol reported Wednesday. Keyes — pronounced Kah-eyes – was with the Texans during preseason and worked out for the Giants Tuesday. On Wednesday, he suited up with the other Burgundy and Gold clad players in Ashburn. The 225-pounder played eight games for the Browns last season and 22 for four teams since making his NFL debut in 2015. Think more special teams than ILB until proven otherwise considering Zach Brown, Mason Foster, Zach Vigil, Josh Harvey-Clemons and Shaun Dion Hamilton also exist.

* Unofficially new on the practice squad: WR Jehu Chesson and TE/FB JP Holtz, who received some buzz about making the initial final 53. Both were in Ashburn at practice.

* Not seen Wednesday: Practice squad quarterback Nic Shimonek. DL Cashaud Lyons was waived Tuesday.

* As for the injury report, wide receiver Maurice Harris (concussion) did not practice. This has become concerning. The 6-foot-3 target missed the final three preseason games. Over the last several days Gruden repeatedly said some form of don’t fret over Harris. At this point, in terms of Week 1, go ahead and fret.

* Zach Brown (oblique) and Colt McCoy (thumb) practiced. Chris Thompson and Jordan Reed weren’t even mentioned. That’s good news all over the place.

* Speaking of Reed, here’s video of Gruden discussing the tight end’s status and Adrian Peterson’s potential usgae. (Follow our IG account while you’re there.)

* Bibbs wasn’t around Wednesday due to illness, per ESPN.

Some news from today , interesting about the ilb and again Marshall and holtz ended up like I said . Looks like another qb will be brought in . My guess Davis Webb

I watched some tape of Shimonek, he threw more balls around the LOS than Mark Brunnell.

Jay Gruden Press Conference

Gruden looks very uncomfortable answering questions concerning slow starts during his tenure and particularly week 1 vs Arizona. Let's see if all the questioning helps him and staff put an emphasis on week 1 this year.

I would agree
Why would you agree dad?

I see holes everywhere on this team. Aging QB, aging RB, no LG, inexperienced WR core, young dline, avg ILB group and a very questionable secondary. I would agree that there are individually very good players on the team (Kerrigan, Norman, ZB, TWill, Scherff, Reed, Thompson) just to name a few but as you can see, those players have tenure and are true professionals. I'm very skeptical of how this team will perform after adding over 12 new players to the roster this year and having very little time this preseason to gel together.

On that note, the tendencies that come with a Gruden coached team must improve this year. The turnovers, false starts, personal foul penalties, 3rd down conversions, red zone improvement, rush defense, tackling and a simple sense of urgency all must improve for this team to compete every week.

Having a young D line is considered a hole for this team? Hmm.. I would have thought just the opposite. Assuming health I see no reason why players like Payne & Allen can't contribute as much as any seasoned vet the Skins have had at this position in the recent past. They should also have lots of help from some of the other DL players. I can see issues at other positions, but I would think that DL is a strength (again - of course barring injuries).

Oh well - as Redskins fans we are conditioned to always see things in a negative light (myself included).
