Is it really a good idea to have your first test on a repaired part scheduled in a live game? I wish he had gotten a least a couple of plays in pre=season just to see how it holds up.

Good question, having no inside info, I suspect Gruden has been overly cautious in the pre-season. Probably a classic case of the old double edged sword in play.

  • from John Kiem
ASHBURN, Va. -- At one point in training camp, Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson was worried about his right leg. After all, the running back was recovering from his broken fibula and torn ligaments. The injury required surgery that included having five screws inserted.

Thompson wasn’t sure when he would feel like himself. But that day finally arrived, leading him to shed any nerves about what might happen in a game. And here’s the kicker: He said he might be more dangerous than last year.

“I’m not worried about it at all," Thompson said. "I've been feeling really good. I’m ready to get back out there and take that first hit and get that part out of my head because that hasn’t happened yet. Other than that, I’m good to go.”

Thompson, who didn’t play in the preseason, has been practicing in full for several weeks and will be ready for Washington’s opener at the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Adrian Peterson as the every-down back.

Thompson was the biggest piece of Washington’s offense in the 10 games he played before his injury last season. He set a career record with 804 yards from scrimmage, including 510 receiving yards. He averaged 13.1 yards per catch. Only the Los Angeles RamsTodd Gurley II averaged more yards per catch when aligned in the backfield than Thompson, of the backs with at least 30 receptions from this area.

In early August, Thompson wondered aloud if it would take a full year from his injury, which occurred Nov. 19, 2017, at the New Orleans Saints, to get back to normal. But earlier this summer, Washington running backs coach Randy Jordan said, “In space, he’s one of the best. I haven’t seen a change in his speed. I think he’s gotten faster.”

Thompson isn’t sure if it’s because the Redskins hadn’t seen him in a while, but regardless, he likes what he has hearing from coaches and teammates. They use the word "explosive" a lot.

“Everybody says I look that way,” Thompson said. “I feel like I am where I was last year, but everybody else is seeing something different. They’re all like, ‘Man, you look way more explosive than you were last year.’ I don’t know if that’s possible that I keep getting more explosive the older I get, but something I’ve been doing has been working.”

Thompson said he can be a bigger weapon because of what he has around him. Last season, he only played six games with tight end Jordan Reed, who wasn’t healthy in any of them. The Redskins also lacked a speed threat at receiver, but they solved that problem by signing Paul Richardson. An increase in options provides a greater chance for Thompson to get lost in the mix.

“With a guy like Paul, there has to be a safety playing over the top almost all the time, unless another team feels it has a corner who can play him one-on-one,” Thompson said. “It takes another set of eyes off me, whether it’s in the run game or pass game.”

But that could also force teams into more man coverage versus the Redskins, especially if they can generate a strong rushing attack with Peterson. The more man teams play versus Washington, the better its weapons will be, especially Reed, Thompson and slot receiver Jamison Crowder. They can align in a two-tight end set with two wideouts and Thompson in the backfield, forcing defenses to stay in their base look and creating mismatches.

good news here
Last season, even with health issues, the Redskins gained the third-most yards receiving out of two tight end sets and were second in yards per catch, according to ESPN Stats & Information data. Most of Thompson’s damage came out of one tight-end sets in 2017, but that could change.

“There’s a lot of things we can do having Jordan and Paul out there,” Thompson said. “It definitely helps us coming out of the backfield. There’s a lot of mismatches out there if we keep everyone health. That’s the biggest key.”

And that’s the main key for Thompson, who has played 13 or more games twice in five seasons.

“He could see anywhere between five snaps and 90 snaps. Right now, it just depends on how we feel and how he feels on game day,” Gruden said. “He’s such a great weapon for us, not only in the passing game, catching routes, but he’s great in pass protection, and he’s also a very good runner, as we all know. So, temptation will be there to play him a lot
