I was wondering whether this would open that door... Hell if I were a helmet manufacturer and I wanted to implement a new design, this would be a huge opportunity to have a superstar promote it.

He will have to pick from existing designs.

They can't just make a custom helmet for him, it has to go through the normal approval process. And they can't make a substandard air cushion helmet for him like he was used to, if it doesn't pass the tests.

Makes sense. Just curious how quickly they can get something like that approved if he wanted to go the custom route. Or will the NFL resist it because they want the helmets to be standardized league-wide?

Probably insist on a standard retail helmet, not a custom job.

That would open things up for everyone to get a custom helmet made.
