Eric Fehr, who scored 43 goals over the past three seasons for the Washington Capitals despite playing mostly on the third and fourth lines, was traded to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday for minor-league forward Danick Paquette and a fourth-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft.

The trade is conditional on Fehr—who was born in Manitoba and continues to make a home there during the offseason—passing a physical with Winnipeg by 5 p.m. ET on Monday.

He'll probably play on the top line there, so good for him.

From what I've heard, he'll most likely start the year on LTIR. Injured shoulder and surgery. I like fehr but someone had to go. Too many forwarda, not enough money. Would have rather chimera go, but whatyagonnado?

Does this trade mean Alzner will sign soon or do the Caps have to make another trade?

Well, I'm not a big fan of this move since I am a big fan of Eric Fehr. He's a guy that combines grit/size with skill. And he's never afraid to go at the net or hang out there to get a goal. I'm guessing the concern is probably with his health, but even if not 100% or missing part of the year, he was a pretty good value at $2mil per. Clearly they've chosen Ward or Brouwer to replace him, b/c this was just a cap clear move. So good on Winnipeg for getting a quality forward. Hope he's healthy and he enjoys returning to Manitoba. I think he's a quality guy off the ice as well.

Clearly the Caps are waving goodbye to guys with frequent injuries (Varly, Fehr) and embracing guys who have not had any major injury problems the last several years (Brouwer, Ward have all started 70+ games the last three years, Vokoun's a rock). Might be beneficial to the team building chemistry over the year, and fits in with McPhee's feeling that they want to start the year a complete team and not make big moves at the deadine.

We'll see. But I don't like this move. I'd rather see a more talented (also oft injured) Alex Semin go than Eric Fehr.

They can definitely sign Alzner now (and be well under the 10%), but someone else is still going to have to go. I'd rather it was one BIG contract (especially looking forward to 12-13) than getting rid of solid role players like Fehr. Bummed.

THIS is the goal I will always remember Eric Fehr for. It's such a typical goal from him and without it, they don't win that game. The guy was pretty timely.

So the caps have traded away the 3 players responsible for their Winter Classic win?
