Tyler Gaffney- a 6TH round pick by the Panthers was injured and ruled out for the season. Since teams have 90 men rosters right now, the Panthers wanted to put him on IR. In order to do that, he had to clear waivers. The Pats snagged him. How could this have been prevented? Im assuming we did the same thing with WHaley and nobody claimed him. Should the Panthers have waited or what? I dont get it.

The only way to protect him would have been to put him on the pup list. But in doing so, they dont get a roster exemption for him. So had they pup'd him until week one, they could have IR'd him. The Pats claimed him, will have to put him on the active pup list and carry him through the off season. At which point they can IR him after final roster cuts. Apparently the PATs are deep enough that they can affords to carry a man on the pup straight to IR. Carolina must not have wanted to keep him that bad, or they thought he would make it through waivers.

So basically they would have to continue to practice with 89 instead of 90 in order to keep him???

Once camp started, basically. Had he gotten hurt before camp, he could have gone straight to IR. Camp rules are a bit stricter on 90 man roster. Pats will eval him and likely PUP him. And unless they feel they need that 90th slot, will hold him until after final cuts then IR him.

Actually the dick move is to release the guy from a $450k salary, reclaim him to a practice squad salary of $60K and IR him. By claiming him, the Pats pick up his salary. Carolina was attempting to get him on the cheap and stash him.

And when they let Ridley and whoever else go, Belicheck will look like a genius and it will be called a great move. That Patriot Brass.

So if the PUP him, they have to pay 450k and lose one roster spot?

Its more about the money. They can get a roster exemption for him in some cases. But they are responsible for his entire salary. But in most cases, being on the pup in camp holds a roster spot. Only way it doesnt hold a roster spot is if he was on PUP from day one of camp in which case the team CAN have a roster exemption... but then if the guy comes off the PUP, some one has to be cut.

In this case the Pats wont get a roster exemption, they will just hold him on the pup until final cuts then IR him.

so now that he has been claimed. He will get his whole 450k? (while on IR)
If so I guess that is pretty cool for him.
