49ers avoid slippage after turnaround season - Yahoo! Sports

According to the Pro Football Post's Joe Fortenbaugh, 29 teams have gone from a sub-.500 record to an above-.500 record over the past 10 years. In 26 of those cases, the team has finished with no more than nine wins the next season.

The 49ers are in good position to avoid that fate after posting a 6-2 record through the first half of the season. Barring a collapse, San Francisco is set up for another double-digit win season and a second consecutive playoff appearance.

Smith's answer to the two fastest guys on the team? Ted Ginn and Vernon Davis. Ginn was the first guy that came to my mind if we're talking mid-range CONSISTENT straight line speed day in, day out, with no major preparation ahead of time. I'd probably like my chances with Culliver next in line.

I would have thought LaMichael James.

Culliver 40 time: 4.36
LMJ 40 time: 4.45

LMJ is much more quick than fast.

I would have guess Ginn, Davis and then maybe LaMichael James but like Clyde said he's more quick than fast (not that he's slow either).

With the same stipulations as I said before (CONSISTENT straight-line speed over mid-range distance without alot of prep time), I'd put A.J. Jenkins ahead of LaMichael James.

Fair enough Davis is a freak though, a guy his size shouldn't be that fast.

Random notes:

As low as Smith is on yards per game, at 27th in the league, our defense is so great that Smith out-yarded 5 out of the 8 QBs we've faced.

Our running game has forced defenses to focus on the run so much that Smith is 5th in the league in yards per attempt. A lot of that is because of yards after the catch. For example, despite being 34th in receptions, Crabtree is 20th in total YAC (total yards not rate). This is helped by Smith's completion percentage, which leads the league. West coast offense seems to be help facilitate that, since it emphasizes (often short) high percentage passes with YAC possibilities.
