Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.
UC basketball is going to suck. No support from the AD, unattractive conference, a new coach that is going to be looking for his next gig. This is going to be a throwback to the Tony Yates era of Bearcat basketball.
It doesn't make much of a difference to the city of Cincinnati though... Back in the 90s when the Reds and Bengals sucked all the time, XU was inconsistent, tOSU football was average, and the Bearcats didn't even try at football, Bearcat basketball was the only game in town. Now everyone would rather watch soccer or pretend they have always liked OSU football.
They’ll be fine, bud. Hoping for Van Exel. Would be fine with Kennedy too.
I don't know Kramer..... Wouldn't Van Exel essentially just be the equivalent to Tony Yates? Key player turned coach, over his head in a new program? I absolutely love the dude, but I have no idea if he can coach.
I'm okay with the idea of this guy from NKU. He's done well down there.
My prediction for you is that you'll be a soccer hooligan within the next 3 years.
my path to soccer fan.
1. Kid tried baseball, hated it
2. let kids pick own sport. kid#1->football, but he wasn't mean enough. kid#2->soccer, but he's not getting playing time.
3. Soccer league begging for coaches, says they'll train me, great. both my kids on the team, great. We lose our first game 5-0 and I realize I've been duped, I start studying soccer hard core.
4. I start playing soccer with some guys at work, I tell them my dilemma, so they get used to yelling at me when I do the wrong thing, but I learn.
5. I start learning from other coaches who are better than I am.
6. Now, I'm an experienced soccer coach who still plays, I understand the game better than most people and I've been playing on Monday nights, even though the other players are much younger than me. I'll keep playing until I get injured. My #1 kid and I go to FCC games frequently, #2 kid will go occasionally, but he doesn't like to sit still.
Here's what sucks, to me. Bohn basically ran the guy out. Now, people may not like Mick, they may point to his March success (or lack there of), but that is just 1 part of many pieces.
Bohn and Cronin never had a good relationship. That is no secrete - however, when UNLV came calling Cronin was going to take the job (he had history there, plus couldn't stand working with Bohn anymore and not getting any resources). Ono stepped in and basically promised Mick the new arena, overriding Bohn. That did not go well with Bohn, and a bad relationship was made even worse.
Bohn basically offered him an extension with little to no bump. Won nearly 90 games in 3 years, won a league title, 2 Tournament Championship - you figured, you would get something. Bohn gave him nothing. UCLA was already alluring enough, but when they are throwing 4MM a year plus hefty bonuses and perks not included in the salary and UC, whom I believe where Mick wanted to stay, is basically saying "Screw you". Yeah, he left.
Now, UC is still in a crappy conference with crappy revenue (The latest AAC media deal is a JOKE) and the resources allocated for bball are nearly non-existent, or they have been for Cronin. Maybe with him gone, Bohn will gladly pour some new resources towards Bball, but the problem is - this lasted so long the list of coaches reads like a who's who of crap. Honestly, the best name out there right now is Matta. Think about that for a moment.
Outside of that, the list is a who's who of nobody - and if by chance they get lucky, he'll be gone in 3 years and the cycle will begin again. If they miss, UC bball reverts back to the early BE days, getting hammered on the court, with no post-season in site. All because the AD got his feelings hurt by a 5'4 leprechaun.
Kenyon Martin is not happy.
It's not like his son was playing at UC anyway.
Some around here won't like it, but it was the obvious choice. You can't really argue with his success in building that program. Obviously no guarantee he'll do well at UC, but it's worth a shot. Given what UC is offering, the only other option is to find someone looking for a second chance (much like the Kelvin Sampson hire at Houston).
Does Bobby Brannen have a son?
