Thx for the memories :suds:

Wade Miley - S - Red Sox
Wade Miley has officially been traded to the Mariners, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says righty reliever Jonathan Aro is also on the move to the Mariners, with starter Roenis Elias and setup man Carson Smith heading to Boston in return. Miley produced an underwhelming 4.46 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 147/64 K/BB ratio in 193 2/3 innings this summer with the Red Sox, but he figures to improve with the change of scenery to pitcher-friendly Seattle. And he's only due a total of $15.08 million over the next two seasons. It's a nice buy-low move for the M's rotation, and the Sox will get a very good, cost-controlled bullpen arm in Smith.

Red Sox won this deal imo, getting a BP arm they needed in exchange for a SP they didn't really need. Also add in Elias who could spot start if need be. Smith/Koji/Kimbrel looks like a solid back end of the BP.

Miley's a fine pitcher. And his ERA was really dragged down by his horrible April. There's value in being a league average pitcher, especially if you're pitching 190+ innings. But the gap between him and Elias is kinda negligible, and Smith was pretty nasty last year. Sox get two relatively young and cheap pitchers.

Hope Miley does well in Seattle. It was nice to see a Red Sox pitcher work quickly for a change (especially when Eduardo Rodriguez came up).

Miley's FIP shows he's better than what his final results were.

As a flyball pitcher he should fare better in Safeco.

But I love what the Sox did here.

This has a chance to be the best pen in the AL.

They should go get both Stammen and Petit and have a ridiculous bullpen with 2 good long guys and those 4 dominant setup men.

This trade should help Taz alot. Save him from the abuse he has had to endure the last few years.

No need to spend more on those guys, especially when we don't know what they can do in the A.L. We have both Matt Barnes, and when he is back healthy, Brandon Workman, to be 2 more young, power arms in the bullpen, capable of being stretched out if needed.

Workman was terrific as a reliever in the playoffs for us in 2013. He became a key bullpen member in the ALCS and W.S. His power sinker can help as a situational righty, or throw an inning or two.

Barnes pitched well in September last season, only giving up 1 run in his final 10.3 innings, with an 8:3 K/BB ratio. After taking out his 2 starts in August, he pitched to a 4.17 ERA, and that was inflated by a couple of rough outings. His fastball should play up in shorter stints. Fastball command is his bigger issue.

After the Price contract, we have a payroll north of $200mm again, so keeping costs down when we can is the better plan, especially if we have to add at the trade deadline. As much as the quality we received, the best part about getting Smith and Elias may be that they are both controlled for 5 more seasons at much cheaper rates.

I don't see why they are not repeatable. It's not like he was lights out. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 2/3 IP, and one BB was intentional. That hit rate is comparable to his career rate over 129 innings (132 hits).

Workman always profiled best as a reliever in the majors, even though he was starting in the minors. His problem was giving up walks and Hr's with Boston. He's also shown the ability to generate K's (8.2 K/9), and could possibly do so at a better rate if limited to an inning at a time. His H/9 could also drop if used that way.

As we've seen with a few pitchers that have come through Boston (Daniel Bard and Andrew Miller), pitchers that had control issues as starters have tended to harness their control (and post better numbers)when used in shorter stints, and Workman's BB/9 isn't too shabby at 3.6/9 when compared to where Bard and Miller were before they figured things out as RP's.

With Workman missing all of 2015, I don't know what his timetable is for 2016, but I would expect he could be ready to start the season in the minors to shake the rust off, and join the Sox a month or so in.

He had under 5 K/9 and over 3 BB/9 in that "terrific" playoff stint.

How else would you characterize it? He didn't give up a run in 8 2/3 innings and helped us in tough situations. Fantastic? Remarkable? Incredible? Terrific? They all work. Whether you think it was a fluke or not, it actually happened.

As I said, 1 BB was intentional. He also didn't give up any runs, but obviously that is not a realistic expectation.

I also didn't say that was the expectation, but rather his hit rate in the playoffs was comparable to his career rate over 129 IP. If you don't like his 5K/9 rate in the playoffs, why do you discount his 8.2 K rate over those 129 IP?

What you take are his career regular season rates of H/9, K/9, and BB/9 and work from there. It is very safe to assume that a pitcher going to the bullpen will have a spike in his K rate as he can let it go for one inning as opposed to pacing himself over 5/6 innings and/or 100 pitches. History has shown us that.

He didn't allow any runs charged to him, but he did allow 2 of the 6 runners he inherited to score, which isn't good at all as it's below the MLB average rate (and is a key stat for relievers).
