By Cutting Porter and Chester, We Cleared $6.3M In Cap Space. What Does That Mean?

Does it mean that an extension for Kerrigan and/or Trent is imminent? This is the last year of both players' contracts. Kerrigan's cap number is $7M and Trent's is $13.73. That's more than $20M between both of them.

:omg:

Some notable things about both of their contracts.

Trent's bloated number is mostly non-guaranteed money. He's got $10.25M in base salary and $2M roster bonus. The Redskins would be very, very wise to extend him before that roster bonus comes due by rolling that number and his base salary into a signing bonus over a four-to-five year deal. By doing this, the Redskins can clear something like $7M off of their cap by extending Trent.

Kerrigan's cap figure, on the other hand, consists entirely of a guaranteed base salary this year. Unlike Trent, who the Redskins can play cash-over-cap with, I'd balk if I were Kerrigan if McCloughan wanted to count my guaranteed money as part of another guaranteed signing bonus. Assuming this is correct, any extension you'd give Kerrigan would add to the Redskins cap number in 2015. Let's say they wanted to give him a $16M signing bonus over a four-year deal. That's $4M added to our cap this year alone. And he'd probably want some type of added (non-guaranteed) base salary as well.

In view of the need to extend both of these guys, this may explain why Chester and Porter are getting cut now. There, of course, may be other reasons for their departures; but, whatever the case may be, it's a good time to start closing deals for extensions of two of our franchise cornerstones. And the $6.3M in cap space cleared by cutting Chester and Porter is a potential sign that that may be coming soon.

We can give RG3 a Romo type deal??

OK sorry couldnt help it.

All joking aside, it means we have flexibility. We could use it to lock up Trent and Ryan long term, or let it roll over into next season and then try and lock them up at that time.

I would prefer to see those deals done sooner rather than later though.

Yes, much sooner rather than later. I'm not sure when Trent's roster bonus is due, but that should be a date that the Redskins should use a marker for an extension with him.

And we can't lock them up next season since this is the last year for both players' contracts.

So we will have a new RT and a new RG, something all of us have been screaming for. I likes it.

Always hard to speculate however, Porter & Chester were 2 players not worthy of a roster spot so there you have it.

It says to me that we're going to stay true to SM's vision.......bigger, stronger. No more signing of a career injury prone player who, surprise, got injured.

This is a perfect segway into a point I was going to make The only position they really didn't address, and it's surprising, is TE. Now Jordan Reed is hurt. Again. Logan Paulson is terrible and Niles can't block. Maybe they can find another tight end with this cash?

There are still some "take a look" type players still on the FA market. I personally don't believe that this team is finished with that venue and we will soon see some interviews and signings from the same. Stay tuned!!!

Exactly, Scrubs who are no better than backups on most teams. Been a long time coming for Chester. Glad to see the FO finally trimming the fat.
