I think if the O's hang onto everyone they would make qualifying offers to Chen, Davis, and Wieters since I'm sure all 3 would decline...Maybe not Davis. That would give us draft picks if they signed elsewhere.

Chen's stock should be very high since he has a sub 3 era and a hitter happen park and division. Pearce may have some interest for a NL team looking for some power off the bench but we wouldn't get decent in return for him. Ditto Davis but maybe a little more in return.

Orioles Will Not Trade Chris Davis While In Contention
After internal consideration of the idea of trading slugger Chris Davis, the Orioles front office decided that it will not look to move the first baseman/right fielder, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports. The club has said as much publicly, but it’s particularly interesting to note that the concept was at least explored.

That stance could change if the team takes a significant dive over the next few weeks, Connolly adds. But he stresses that Davis will likely remain in the fold unless the O’s truly feel they have slipped out of contention.

Of course, as Connolly rightly explains, the club’s math necessarily factors in the strong possibility that it will make Davis a qualifying offer after the season. Though he’s been something of an enigmatic hitter in recent campaigns, ranging from putting up the slash line of a mediocre power bat to that of a legitimate superstar, Davis is still just 29 and seems a good bet to decline the one-year offer if it is extended.

A declined qualifying offer would put Baltimore in line for a draft compensation, so the team already has a strong expectation of getting future value out of the pending free agent. The gap between what it can achieve for him at the trade deadline and the value of the compensatory pick is not, presumably, significant enough to warrant sacrificing the ability to field Davis in the lineup the rest of the way.

Confirming expectations, Orioles executive VP Dan Duquette made clear that he has every intention of pushing for the post-season, as Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports. He expects a “seller’s market,” as do most observers, because “just a handful” of clubs profile as true sellers. But don’t expect Baltimore to take that opportunity to cash in any of its expiring contracts. “Our pending free agents, the most value they could have would be to this year’s ballclub and their contribution to this year’s team,” said Duquette. “So any pending free agents, we’d like to see them play their best for the Orioles and help us accomplish our goals. That has been our focus all year. … “We have some pretty solid depth to the team and within our organization. Our club is in the hunt and we want to stay in the hunt and we’re going to do what we can to supplement our major league club.”

In my opinion, either buying or selling is okay... but the Orioles organization needs to commit fully to one option. Given the sheer number of pending free agents, my concern is that standing pat would most likely result in both missing the postseason in 2015 and a longer rebuild process for 2016 and on.

My god this team is dogshit. I'm secretly hoping they lose 12 of 15 by July's end and just dump Wieters and Davis. I literally can't watch them, it's painful.

2 for 50 after the Wieters groundout to end the game. Wow, just wow.

Yea I really hope they don't try and resign Davis. He's Mark Reynolds 2.0.

O's have a very hard scheduled coming up. Tigers, Yanks, Ray, Braves, Tigers. They could easily lose 10 games before the end of the month.

Overreaction of the day:
  • Time to dust out the "rebuilding since Angelos" sign again?
  • The Orioles might as well aim for 44-118 so that they could rebuild faster-- just look at what happened to the Astros after 4 years with an average record of 58-104.

Hindsight is 20-20... but just imagine what the Orioles could get back in a trade had they sold high on the following players:
  • Jason Hammel (and maybe Jim Johnson) after 2012
  • Chris Davis (and maybe Tommy Hunter) after 2013
  • Bud Norris and Steve Pearce after 2014
(For 2015, that could mean trading Jimenez by the deadline before he fades in the 2nd half.)

Insane performance by Tillman yesterday, that kinda came outta nowhere. Solid win vs. Price, and looking like a series win today. Nothing to get overly excited about, but it looks like this will be their first series win in like 3 weeks.

he Orioles have expressed interest in trading for Padres outfielder Justin Upton, sources tell Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The O’s have been looking to add an outfielder this season.

The Orioles aren’t the first team to show interest in Upton this summer. The Mets are reportedly aiming high in their pursuit of outfield help and Upton is high on their list. Upton, who is in his first year with the Padres, is owed the prorated portion of a $14.5MM salary for the rest of the season. Through 370 plate appearances this season, Upton owns a slash line of .252/.331/.426 with 15 homers plus 17 stolen bases.

What do you think they'd have to give up?

  • Orioles GM Dan Duquette is very serious about wanting to add a bat and has indeed expressed interest in Jay Bruce, Justin Upton and Carlos Gomez, but as Rosenthal notes, the Orioles may have the thinnest farm system in the game. Baseball America ranked Baltimore’s farm just 29th heading into the season, and that was before recent injuries to top arms Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvey. The team has some interesting names ready at the Triple-A level, but they also need to replace departing free agentsChris Davis, Matt Wieters and Wei-Yin Chen and will need to rely on the farm to fill some of those holes.

I don't know but I hope they wouldn't give up much. Even with him we're no lock to win the division and he's a free agent after this season.

The Orioles “appear to be willing” to consider including highly-regarded young righty Kevin Gausman in a deadline deal, Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports on Twitter.

Baltimore’s lack of movable, high-level prospects has been discussed often this summer, as the team has dealt with injuries to Hunter Harvey and Dylan Bundy. While Gausman is no longer a prospect after seeing big league time in each of the last three years, his value lies primarily in the future.
