How many missed starts does that 3.8 ERA come with? Bumgarner's missed what, ~30% of his starts the past 3 years? Every missed start is a start he adds no value.

No denying that the length of Cole's contact is ridiculous, but that's a different argument. You're saying he's presently not that much better than Bumgarner, which is an absurd comment.

Again, if you don't think a run difference on ERA is significant, than you must think Pedro wasn't that much better than Burnett... Can't pick and choose when a run difference in ERA is significant t when convenient for you...

I just said that paying more than double for an earned run is absurd. You are better off settling for the 3.9 era and using those resources to get other pieces. Unless Cole is going to be starting every 4th game.

Not to mention, if madbum finds his 2016 form again . . .

Yankees bought high. Dbacks bought low.

The value difference is more than a run in ERA however.... It's a run in ERA plus potentially far less innings for Bumgarner. Every start that Bumgarner misses (and he's missed a lot in recent years) provides zero value to the team, as they're forced to run some spot starter/AAA pitcher out there.

What are the odds of a 30 year old with an MLB workload of nearly 2,000 innings (when you factor in playoffs) finds his magic from 4 seasons ago?

If it were 1 or 2 seasons back, I could see it, but we're talking regaining his prowess from 4 seasons back, especially when he's moving from an extreme pitcher's park to a hitter friendly park.

Yankees certainly bought high. It remains to be seen how the D'Backs bought, because if Bumgarner continues to struggle and/or barely pitch have a season, then they certainly bought high.

Oh, give me a break. Sure Cole had a stellar 2019. His 2018 was only about 1 earned run better than madbums 2019. Cole's 2017 was lame.

The Yankees just agreed to pay Cole 240 mill more than madbum. Theoretically, a team could have signed BOTH madbum and strasburg for about the same as Cole.

You guys get too caught up in recent performance.

I don't think Cole's pre-2018 seasons are very relevant considering how much his strikeout rate skyrocketed.

Bum threw over 200 innings last season. . . . .

He missed about a season's worth of starts in 2017-2018, I think that's what he was referring to. Though to be fair, Bum was hit by a line drive and had a dirt bike incident. The latter was stupid and avoidable, but I wouldn't give him the "injury prone" label either.

And what about the two seasons before that?

The last time he had a full good season was during the Obama presidency...in his past 3 seasons, he missed significant time in 2 of them and had a near 4 ERA and 2.5 WAR in the other.

Oh good, a fresh contract for Arizona to unload in two years when the guy doesn't take them anywhere again.

Kind of hard to do in a hitters park.

they aren't remotely close over the last two seasons

and now Bum's going from a pitcher's park (where he gave up only 74 home runs versus 118 on the road) to a neutral ballpark

Don't underestimate Bum wanting to play in a more hitter-y park so he can hit better. It's dumb but he's not exactly Steven Hawking. A little surprised he didn't go to Colorado.
