Zach Wheeler got more. Wonder if Madbum wanted out of San Fran.

Doesn’t sound like the current SF regime had much/any interest in bringing him back. Apparently they only offered a half-hearted 4-year deal.

Very true he is not. Just like Kershaw. I still thought he'd get more money.

Bumgarner IMO is a big game playoff pitcher but just an above average seasonal pitcher these days. Will be great for AZ if they make the playoffs but would have been better if he went to a perennial playoff team.

Oh good, a fresh contract for Arizona to unload in two years when the guy doesn't take them anywhere again.

Really another indicator of what a colossal overpay the Cole contract is. Sure Cole is better, but not that much better. Hes only a year younger and is making on average over twice as much per year. Strasburgs deal looks pretty bad too.

they aren't remotely close over the last two seasons

and now Bum's going from a pitcher's park (where he gave up only 74 home runs versus 118 on the road) to a neutral ballpark

Oh, give me a break. Sure Cole had a stellar 2019. His 2018 was only about 1 earned run better than madbums 2019. Cole's 2017 was lame.

The Yankees just agreed to pay Cole 240 mill more than madbum. Theoretically, a team could have signed BOTH madbum and strasburg for about the same as Cole.

You guys get too caught up in recent performance.

Last two seasons:

Cole - 164 ERA+, 412 IP, 0.96 WHIP, 5.38 WHIP, 12.1 bWAR
Bum - 110 ERA+, 337 IP, 1.17 WHIP, 3.63 K/BB, 4.9 bWAR

Not close...

Are you seriously saying a full run in ERA is not a big difference?

While we're comparing.a run difference in ERA, Pedro Martinez's career ERA is a run better than AJ Burnett's...go ahead and say Pedro wasn't that much better than Burnett..

Why don't you compare their last three seasons?

If you're a GM, is an earned run worth 18-19 mill per year?

I'd rather have a 3.8 era for 17 mill than a 2.8 for 36 mill. Not to mention the contract length.

You mean include a season where Bumgarner was incapable of playing half the season? That's not helping your argument...

Injured and madbum still was an earned run better than Cole. Didn't you just tell me an earned run was a big deal?

How many missed starts does that 3.8 ERA come with? Bumgarner's missed what, ~30% of his starts the past 3 years? Every missed start is a start he adds no value.

No denying that the length of Cole's contact is ridiculous, but that's a different argument. You're saying he's presently not that much better than Bumgarner, which is an absurd comment.

Again, if you don't think a run difference on ERA is significant, than you must think Pedro wasn't that much better than Burnett... Can't pick and choose when a run difference in ERA is significant t when convenient for you...
