Doesn’t sound like the current SF regime had much/any interest in bringing him back. Apparently they only offered a half-hearted 4-year deal.Zach Wheeler got more. Wonder if Madbum wanted out of San Fran.
A 5 year deal for a 30 year old pitcher coming off an injury in 2018? Oh, hell, no. He ain't th Mad Bum anymore.

Really another indicator of what a colossal overpay the Cole contract is. Sure Cole is better, but not that much better. Hes only a year younger and is making on average over twice as much per year. Strasburgs deal looks pretty bad too.
they aren't remotely close over the last two seasons
and now Bum's going from a pitcher's park (where he gave up only 74 home runs versus 118 on the road) to a neutral ballpark

Oh, give me a break. Sure Cole had a stellar 2019. His 2018 was only about 1 earned run better than madbums 2019. Cole's 2017 was lame.
Last two seasons:
Cole - 164 ERA+, 412 IP, 0.96 WHIP, 5.38 WHIP, 12.1 bWAR
Bum - 110 ERA+, 337 IP, 1.17 WHIP, 3.63 K/BB, 4.9 bWAR
Not close...
Are you seriously saying a full run in ERA is not a big difference?
While we're comparing.a run difference in ERA, Pedro Martinez's career ERA is a run better than AJ Burnett's...go ahead and say Pedro wasn't that much better than Burnett..
You mean include a season where Bumgarner was incapable of playing half the season? That's not helping your argument...Why don't you compare their last three seasons?

If you're a GM, is an earned run worth 18-19 mill per year?
I'd rather have a 3.8 era for 17 mill than a 2.8 for 36 mill. Not to mention the contract length.
