I'm serious...our pen is playing better than any other year I can remember including 2010.

Is it sustainable? Romo, Affeldt, Casilla and Lopez aren't doing anything out of the ordinary.
Gutierrez is solid but not crazily so. Machi the only question, he can't go the whole year like this (can he?)
Even the back back end guys like Kontos are pitching well.

Thoughts?

That 2010 bullpen is pretty hard to beat. You had Romo, Affeldt, Casilla and Lopez doing their things, but all an inning earlier than what they are now. B-Weez at closer made that pen. And don't forget how good RamRam was. Mota was alright, for a back-end guy. I'd probably rather have Petit rounding out the Pen.

I do love this group though. Kontos is going to force an interesting decision, the guy has come back looking better than ever after last year's huge disappointment. His fastball is reaching 94mph now! Where did this come from? Machi is just ridiculous right now, this forkball his taken him to new heights. Huff hasn't really done anything to earn the boot, but he might be the odd man out here soon.

FYWW has been in full force this year, that's for damn sure.

One more thing to add on the 2010 bullpen, the starters that year allowed the whole pen to settle into defined roles after JLo and RamRam were acquired. 4 guys pitched at least 193 innings, and Bum averaged 6 innings per start once called up. That allowed FYWW to know their jobs:

Weez, closer. Romo and Lopez, 8th inning. Casilla and Affeldt, 7th inning. RamRam, 6th inning/mop-up. Mota, long man.

That helped the bullpen immensely, and it plagued it last year.

A great discussion point. Here are the ERA+ numbers for the two bullpens(min 25 appearances in 2010)

2010
1.RamRam 594
2.JLo 280
3.Weez 217
4.KCYa 201
5.Romo 180
6.Runz 130
7.Bautista 106
8.Ray 96
9.JA 95
10. Billy Weed 91

1 HOF from Planet Ramon, 4 outstanding relievers, one above average, 4 average arms. Three other relievers pitched that year (Medders, Joaquin, JMart) but very few innings and all were below average.

2014
1. Machi 937
2. KCYa 243
3. JA 216
4. Romo 102
5. Guti 92
6. Biggie 65
7. Huff 62
8. Kontos ??
9. Dunning ??

One HOF alien from Planet Splitter, two outstanding, two average, two mediocre, and two with insufficient innings.

Verdict: 2010, but it's all SSS...interesting to track.

I love how we got Javy and Ram in 2010 for John Bowker and Joe Martinez, and Daniel Turpin, respectively.

Then we were able to turn Ram+Andres Torres into Angel Pagan.

You might say Daniel Turpin had a big part in the Giants winning 2 World Series...

Sabes makes his occasional questionable trades, but my goodness he more than often trade-rapes other GM's.

It's a small sample. Biggie has been hurt by a couple bad starts, but he's been effective coming out of the Pen. Huff may not be long for the team, especially if Kontos keeps it up, he'll likely take his spot upon Casilla's return.

I'm surprised Gutierrez's ERA+ is so high, his WHIP is sub-1. I haven't seen much of him this year, but he seems like a serviceable mop-up guy.

Meh, Romo has been good, not great, this year. His recent appearances are showing decline. The rest of the pen has been relatively stellar, but without an elite closer, I'm hard-pressed to say this is better than 2010.
