One hit wonder? He came to Philly and promptly created the last defense to go #1 vs the run, #1 vs the pass, and #1 over all. He was a prick but if he was your coach you loved him. Much much more then a one hit wonder. He built 2 of the greatest Ds ever.

Yeah, I remember that year...when Buddy's gimmicky defense ran roughshod over a pathetic NFC and won the SB.

err. wait, that ain't right.

That was because his O was bad. You said one hit wonder but he created great Ds in the 70s 80s and 90s

He owes his only SB ring to Jim McMahon and Tony Eason.

There was nothing innovative about Buddy Ryan. He was one of the first DC's to talk a head coach into lining up in an all out blitz set on every down and he and rung up some sweet stats along the way. He lost more that he won, but apparently that means everything if he coached your team.

His was a gimicky "D" that was figured out quickly. Nice stats and not much else.

Live by the blitz die by the blitz. In 85 he lived by the blitz, but how much of that living should be credited to the players he had on that D.

As much as I and a many other Patriots fans pull our hair out because of Belichick's theory of bend , but don't break it is the high percentage way to to go.

Be aggressive when the down and distance is in your favor and don't be aggressive when the down and distance is not.

Agree, I have no issues with Bens font break defenses, it let's teams cover flaws and use short fields as an aid.

Yep...I will say, they were both pioneers...Buddy Ryan and his 46 DEF was one of the 1st to stack the LOC and intimidate QBs...Summit literally drove the team bus to games in the beginning when no one cared anything about womens basketball...not that it's big or anything, but w/o Summit, there probably is no WNBA.

What's WNBA?

The Early 90s Eagles. On many people's top 10 list. Went #1 vs the run and pass which is very rare.

Buddy's defense in Philly was really darn good. The problem was he mishandled Cunningham and the O. Very talented teams, but wasted.

I need to find the article but I read one by a guy who said if you plug in the Eagles Offensive stats that was the greatest D ever. The year Cunningham got hurt the D played as well as any D ever. Not to mention the insane performance against #1 O in Houston "The house of pain game" and "The body bag game" vs rhe Skins along with the 11 sack game of Aikman. Tremendous D with the leagues worst OLINE ever.

I didnt have a problem with how Cunningham was used. It was the failure to address the awful OLine.

Didn't Cunningham win MVP in 1990? Frigging guy was running for his life. Maybe it was Offensive player of the year.

That was the year the Eagles were suppose to breakout and take the next step. Just sheer bad luck RC went out for the year.

No doubt RC made some off the wall great plays but Buddy didn't institute stability and let RC run the O. When he went to Minny with an OC that worked with him, RC looked like a different QB then what he was in Philly.
