When you completely ignore defense, your roster is garbage.

They have a potentially nice offense. I have said said that since day 1. They have a decent rotation. They have a history of knowing how to handle a bully and getting the best out of it (to the tune of regularly having the best, or one of the best bullies in the game).

But too many teams ignore defense. A bad defense will kill good pitching every day of the week. A bad defense will destroy a team's morale every day of the week.

SD has always been very laid back and willing to accept a .500 or below ball club while drawing an average of 28,000 fans per game. It's always been about the ballpark experience and notreally about winning or losing. Now come the new owners who spill big bucks into the equation and I guess they want results so nice guy Buddy Black is history. Pads can compete with LA and SF but can't beat them consistently. Best player is Justin Upton who is everything advertised but he is a one year rental. Can't afford him next year.

Will new manager help? Maybe temporarily but not in long run. Padres are in the wrong division to compete every year with LA and SF.

Until(IF) Kemp turns into beast mode and AJP adds a SS who can hit over .200 + guys like Ross and Cashner remember how to pitch deep into games without giving up a lot of runs, nothing will change no matter the manager. It's a shame guys like Upton, Norris, and Shields, and Maurer are doing their jobs while most of their teammates aren't.

The pitching staff FIP is nearly identical to the staff ERA, so I'm not sure that you can cite the defense as a major reason to why the team isn't good this year. The Padres have allowed the 2nd most HRs in the entire majors this year and 5th most walks, so that's all falling on the pitcher/catcher.
